Historic Lyon Hotel Re-launches As Chic MGallery Whilst Celebrating The City's Artistic Roots
  Published On:   2013-05-20

France’s culinary capital now sits firmly on the Australian traveller’s agenda thanks to the launch of Emirates-Qantas five-weekly services, and complementing the new air services is the re-opening of one of the city’s grandest and most historic hotels, the Hotel Carlton Lyon – now part of Accor’s distinctive MGallery Collection.

Lyon is a historical and architectural landmark city, just over two hours by TGV south west of Paris. For centuries the city proudly carried the reputation as the gastronomic capital of France, due partly to the presence of many of France’s finest chefs – such as Paul Bocuse – as well as the city’s close proximity to two of France’s best known wine growing regions: Beaujolais to the North and Côtes du Rhône to the South.

The Carlton is just a 5-minute walk from the Bellecour metro stop and is the ideal base for exploring Lyon, with its opera house, museums, the St. Jean Cathedral and the Musée des Beaux Arts. The hotel has grown into a legend. Built in 1894, the majestic stone façade is quintessentially Haussmann and bears witness to this building’s rich history.

Internally, the majestic staircase envelops the mythical 1930 Roux-Combaluzier elevator, which is made entirely of wood and wrought iron. The retro décor in the lobby, bar, corridors and rooms intertwines distinctly classical atmospheres and an up-to-the minute feel. The most coveted of the80 rooms are the 4 Rotonde junior suites, featuring round sitting rooms and splendid views over the well-known Place de la République.

The rooms have been renamed to pay tribute to the celebrities who have stayed there – and still stay there. Actor Patrick Chesnais, it is said, enjoys rehearsing his lines in room 322, which is now named after him. Suite 103 was actor Laurent Terzieff’s room for many years and his autobiography “Seul avec tous” is now placed on the side table in the room.

Art is everywhere in this MGallery Collection hotel, which also features period stained-glass windows, blue marble and wallpaper created especially to capture the 1920 period spirit. The interior design is distinctly reminiscent of a theatre, and the ubiquitous red is even offered as part of the bar menu – a Carlton Red cocktail – and as a Carlton Red nail polish in the spa, a product created in partnership with beauty product brand, Kure Bazaar.

The jazz playing in the champagne bar in the evening, the furniture radiating 1920s charm and the Art Deco moldings put this hotel in a league of its own.

To make guests feel like stars pampered from head to toe, the Spa Cinq Mondes offers massages as well as the opportunity to unwind completely in the Turkish bath, massage parlor or relaxation room. The nail salon, a special feature for women, also provides hand and nail treatments. For tourists who want to capture the feel of the city at its finest should plan to visit the city in December for its famous light festival Fête des Lumières which occurs every 8 December and lasts for four days, earning Lyon the title of Capital of Lights. The Festival originated to express gratitude towards Mary, Mother of Jesus, with every house expected to place candles along the outsides of all
the windows to produce a spectacular effect throughout the streets. The Festival has expanded to include professional light shows over the four day period, with the two main focal points of activity being the Basilica of Fourviere and the Place des Terreaux.

IHG,the largest international hotel group in Saudi Arabia both by number of rooms and number of hotels, has signed an agreement with Dyafah Al Mutahida LLC to open a 200-key Staybridge Suites in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This will be the first Staybridge Suites property, offering an extended stay experience, in Saudi Arabia.

Travel industry leaders discuss tourism's impact
  Published On:   2013-05-20

The U.S. travel industry is poised for one the strongest summers in history as demand soars and travelers reinvest in their vacation plans, said top travel executives from Best Western International and the U. S. Travel Association at the eighth annual Leisure Travel Summit in New York last week.

With Best Western tracking a 3 to 4 percent growth in summer hotel rates for its 2,200 hotels in North America the organization is predicting a strong summer travel season, Dorothy Dowling, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Best Western attributed the steady year-over-year growth to renewed consumer commitment when it comes to taking a summer vacation.

“We’re seeing continued demand increases and a lot of that lends back to the belief that Americans view vacation travel as a right… they want to invest in time with family and those they care about,” said Dowling. “We had solid growth last year, then improved growth this year, and it speaks to how consumers are driving this economic recovery and will continue to do so.”

Panelists agreed that travel, both domestic and inbound, is a key economic driver for the entire United States economy. The travel industry employs one out of eight Americans, and has added 398,000 jobs since the economic recovery began in early 2010 according to the U.S Travel Association. “Increases in domestic and international travel volume create a healthier U.S. economy because those travelers support millions of American jobs and generate much needed tax revenue,” said Gary Oster, U.S. Travel Association’s senior vice president, business development.

According to Bill Sutherland, AAA vice president of travel services, multi-generational travel will be very popular this year. In a recent AAA survey, nearly one-third of respondents plan to take a multi-generational trip in the next 12 months.

“Of those multi-generational travelers, 25 percent are traveling in groups of three generations, which is a very striking number,” said Sutherland. “As we go forward, the infrastructure will need to evolve to accommodate this kind of large-scale family travel.”

According to Dowling, this rise in multi-generational travel is due in large part to the fact that women are now the primary decision-makers when it comes to purchasing, a concept that Dowling refers to as the “she-conomy.”

“As women take a much more central role in families’ financial decisions, we’re seeing changes in the way people travel,” said Dowling. “Women want to invest in relationships with their family, partners, and loved ones, and they place a high value on vacations as a way to strengthen these relationships.” Dowling says that brands are recognizing the decision-making power that women represent and are increasingly investing in programs that will speak strongly to women and their families, such as Best Western’s partnership with Disney.

Morgans Hotel Group Provides Clarification On Investor Filing
  Published On:   2013-05-19

Morgans Hotel Group Co.  ("MHG" or the "Company") today provided clarification regarding statements made in a filing submitted by The Yucaipa Companies ("Yucaipa").  The reference in the Yucaipa filing was to a letter received in November 2012 from a large international hotel company proposing to acquire all of the Company's outstanding common stock for $7.50 per share in cash.  The letter said the proposal was based on publicly available information and would be subject to confirmatory due diligence.  The Company's Board of Directors discussed this proposal and concluded that the price was not sufficiently attractive to commence formal negotiations in light of the views expressed to the Company's special transaction committee by its independent financial advisor regarding the prospects for growth in its stock price over the next several years if the Company is successful in securing additional management contracts through implementation of its strategic plan.  The Company's Board responded that it was not interested at the proposed price, but that it might entertain a proposal at a significantly higher price.  A similar proposal was received by the Company from the same party at the same price in February 2013 and the Company's position on the proposal was unchanged.
