Quither, a detached house for eight converted from a stone barn near Lower Broadaford in South Devon, has joined Helpful Holidays green cottages scheme, which encourages home owners to think sustainably. It’s the twelfth holiday home to be added to the West Country self-catering agency’s portfolio of properties that now carry the green tree symbol.
In order to qualify, Quither was assessed by Helpful Holidays against 69 aspects which help make a lesser impact on the environment. Particular regard was given to energy, pollution and water as well as its environmental effect on local wildlife and landscapes.
The cottage has solar panels to help provide energy, which is supplemented by a green electricity tariff, while logs for the fire are supplied from the owner’s nearby woodland. It also has a private sewage system using an aerobic biological process to purify waste water.
Meticulously converted, Quither is mainly decorated in cream, stone and taupe while outside there’s a fine hot tub for five and enclosed garden. Guests are welcome to wander the 8.5 acre valley, which is part of the South Devon Wildlife Wonders project to improve wildlife conservation; water meadows and ancient woodland provide a natural habitat for birds, bats, fish and other flora and fauna. The owner’s farm is also a designated County Wildlife Site.

Rule Britannia: A Summer of Celebration at Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane |

As the nation joins in the celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this summer, Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane invites everyone to share in the festivities and savour the Jubilee atmosphere with a sumptuous Coronation Tea.
The practice of afternoon tea drinking, the most quintessential of British customs, is a tradition in itself and Executive Pastry Chef Nicolas Durousseau has entered into the Jubilee spirit and created a menu in honour of this very special occasion. Presenting an all-English menu using ingredients that have been sourced from the best produce the British Isles has to offer, Chef Nicolas’ menu includes a selection of finger sandwiches with traditional fillings, scones and clotted cream, and cakes and pastries made from historical recipes that span the 60 years of Her Majesty’s reign on the throne. And as a tribute to Britain’s favourite pastime, Four Seasons has also commissioned a special Diamond Jubilee Tea, a bespoke blend of black Celanese and Indian teas, as the perfect complement to the delectable Coronation Tea menu.
The Coronation Tea will be served daily at the Hotel from Monday, May 28 to Friday, June 29, 2012, between 3:00 and 6:00 pm in Amaranto Restaurant, Lounge and Bar, under the trees on the Garden Terrace (sunny days willing) and for resident guests, in the comfort of their guestroom ordered through Room Service. Constance Spry, the mid-twentieth century author and florist who arranged the flowers at Westminster Abbey for the Coronation, is credited with the invention of Coronation Chicken. Preparing the food for Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation Banquet in 1953, Spry proposed a recipe of cold chicken and curry cream sauce, later to become known as Coronation Chicken. As the story goes, the recipe for Queen Elizabeth Cake was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother during the Second World War. It re-appeared for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and has remained popular ever since. The Marie biscuit was named after the now- forgotten Grand Duchess Maria, or Marie, Alexandrovna of Russia, daughter of Czar Alexander II of Russia and wife of the second son of Queen Victoria. Marie biscuits are known to be a favourite of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth.

Catch Burger Fever with Tips from Executive Chef John Johnson |
|
|
|
| |
Published On: 2012-05-19 |

As grilling season arrives, creating that juicy, perfectly charred burger poses a challenge for many, but when successfully achieved, well-deserved bragging rights prevail. Lucky for all, Executive Chef John Johnson of Four Seasons Hotel New York shares his six simple tips for major success.
Make sure that the beef is fresh. Chef Johnson prefers a blend of 75 percent short ribs with 25 percent sirloin. Don’t be shy with the salt and pepper - season fearlessly in all the nooks and crannies. Char the burger with care. Burgers cook best over medium flames. When the meat is nearly done, reduce the heat as to not burn the outside, but retain that great charred flavour. Note that a great burger already has plenty of fat to keep it from sticking, so no need to touch that oil or spray on any extra poundS. Let the burger rest for at least one minute on a cool plate before serving. This allows the natural juices to relax and remain in the burger instead of dripping after that first bite. Make that good burger great with some tasty companions: homemade pickles, fried onions, chips on the burger or hot peppers. Serve with a side dish such as Chef’s Gingered Cole Slaw.
For those who do not have access to a grill, Chef Johnson has created a burger menu found in The Garden, TY Lounge and The Bar. Beginning now through the end of summer, interesting versions of the quintessential burger will be presented. Featured burgers include a lamb burger crushed with cucumber served with za’atar spiced fries, a griddle sweet onion burger with gruyere and smoked salt fries, a special blend burger topped with New York State cheddar, and the famous Garden tuna and turkey burgers. The Bar will serve miniature versions as well. Lunch is served in The Garden every day from noon to 2:30 pm; TY Lounge offers dinner from 2:30 to 10:00 pm; and The Bar serves hors d'oeuvres from 2:30 to 11:00 pm.
