Bhopal and Indore Metro Launches 'Celebration on Wheels': A New Era of Urban Events

In an innovative stride towards revitalizing urban engagement, the Bhopal and Indore Metro systems have introduced the trailblazing “Celebration on Wheels” initiative. This program bridges transportation with creative expression, providing an extraordinary venue for events, film shoots, and personalized experiences within the metro system. From joyous birthday celebrations to enchanting pre-wedding photo sessions and promotional advertisements, individuals and organizations can now book metro coaches and station areas for diverse occasions. In an effort to combat the current challenge of low ridership, this initiative not only seeks to enhance revenue but also aspires to reestablish the metro as a vibrant hub for social and artistic endeavors.

MPMRCL Introduces “Celebration on Wheels” to Revive Metro Experience in Bhopal and Indore

The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) has launched the “Celebration on Wheels” program aimed at boosting both user engagement and financial sustainability for the Bhopal and Indore Metro networks. Recognizing the pressing need for revitalization amid dwindling passenger numbers, this initiative enables individuals, corporations, and production teams to utilize metro coaches and station spaces for various occasions. It positions the metro as not merely a means of transport, but as a modern venue designed for multifaceted use.

The Concept: Celebrating Movement

This creative scheme allows participants to reserve metro coaches for an array of events, including:

  • Birthday parties
  • Pre-wedding photoshoots
  • Kitty parties
  • Film shoots for advertisements, documentaries, and web series
  • Photo sessions and other creative projects

One of the standout features of this initiative is its adaptability; bookings can occur with the metro stationary or in transit, creating an exclusive and dynamic backdrop for creative projects. Rental fees will range from INR 5,000 to INR 7,000 per hour, depending on the status of the coach, allowing varied budget options for potential users while offering a unique celebration space in an urban context.

Streamlined Booking and Guidelines

Those interested in locking down a metro coach for their event should be aware of the straightforward yet necessary advance planning involved. Reservations must be made at least 15 days prior to the event to ensure effective coordination. Stringent security and operational protocols are enforced to maintain the safety and operational integrity of metro services during these occasions.

Bookings should be arranged through the official MPMRCL channels, accessible to individuals, companies, and any creative groups in search of an extraordinary venue.

Addressing Low Ridership Constraints

The launch of this initiative coincides with a critical period for both Bhopal and Indore metro systems, which have faced substantial challenges in attracting passengers. For example, in Bhopal, weekday ridership numbers languish at under 200, with modest weekend increases just surpassing 500 pedestrians. These figures fall significantly short of sustaining the metro’s daily operational costs, estimated at over INR 8 lakh, with ticket revenues barely reaching INR 10,000.

As a response, authorities have made operational modifications, such as reducing scheduled trips and shifting train start times. However, these measures have yet to yield substantial ridership improvements.

Encouraging Greater Community Involvement

S Krishna Chaitanya, Managing Director of MPMRCL, expresses that this program embodies the evolving urban landscape of Bhopal and Indore. He emphasizes the need for the metro system to seamlessly integrate into the social and cultural framework of the cities. By transforming metro coaches into venues for engagements and activities, MPMRCL seeks to enrich public interaction while reshaping the image of these networks as modern, versatile assets.

Generating Revenue Beyond Commuter Fares

While tackling the pressing challenge of low ridership, the “Celebration on Wheels” initiative aims to cultivate new sources of non-ticket revenue, providing much-needed fiscal support for MPMRCL. By presenting metro coaches as event spaces, MPMRCL envisions a supplementary income stream that enhances traditional ticketing revenues while stoking community interest in the metro system.

Anticipating Future Growth for Bhopal Metro

The Bhopal Metro initiative, first proposed in 2009, encountered various delays before commencing operations in December 2025. The current operational model includes a 6.22-km priority corridor, with potential expansions in the pipeline.

Despite historical challenges, authorities believe that the “Celebration on Wheels” initiative marks a turning point towards public engagement, positioning the metro beyond mere transport but as a social meeting point for community interaction and artistic endeavors.

Looking Ahead: Future Prospects

As the Bhopal Metro grows, the “Celebration on Wheels” initiative may serve as an inspiring template for other cities experiencing similar ridership challenges. By merging transit and event hosting, metro systems could witness a surge in public interaction and non-ticket revenue, fostering long-term viability.

The metros of Bhopal and Indore have the potential to redefine their roles as urban venues that align with modern demands for versatile spaces. The “Celebration on Wheels” initiative could signal a larger trend in which metro systems evolve into multifaceted spaces, meeting both transportation needs and the creative aspirations of local communities.
