Exciting Tourism Growth in South America: MSC Cruises Announces Changes for 2026-27 Season

In a significant boost for tourism, MSC Cruises has revealed its updated plans for the 2026-2027 season in South America. The cruise line will deploy five ships across Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, shifting its focus toward shorter regional itineraries. The key ports included in these exciting updates are Santos, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Paranaguá, Itajaí, Balneário Camboriú, Maceió, and Salvador, all anticipated to experience a surge in tourism and local spending between November 2026 and April 2027.

By recalibrating its cruise schedule to align with national holiday calendars and coastal travel demand, MSC aims to expand the influence of cruise tourism within Brazil and Argentina’s leisure travel markets, which have shown significant recovery in international passenger numbers in recent years.

MSC Seaview: A Key Player in Regional Itineraries

One of the most notable adjustments is the redeployment of the MSC Seaview. Originally set to sail in the Middle East, this 2018-built ship will now become the fifth vessel from MSC to operate in South America.

Beginning in November 2026, MSC Seaview will offer enticing seven-night cruises connecting Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Passengers can look forward to departure points from Santos, Buenos Aires, and Balneário Camboriú until March 2027. This structured itinerary aims to attract not only Brazilian travelers from areas like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, but also international visitors from Argentina and Uruguay seeking immersive short-haul experiences.

Changes for MSC Divina and MSC Musica

The introduction of the MSC Seaview has caused a reshuffle in the deployment of other MSC vessels for the 2026-27 season. MSC Divina will now concentrate on offering shorter three- and four-night cruises from Santos, a strategic move that enhances short-break tourism in line with Brazil’s extensive holiday calendar. This approach decreases the demand for longer itineraries in the region.

As for MSC Musica, its voyages to Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay from Santos have been replaced by an expanded sailing schedule from Paranaguá, Itajaí, and Rio de Janeiro. Post refurbishment, this vessel will introduce innovative seven-night sailings along the Brazilian coastline from late December to late February, capitalizing on the summer season when domestic beach holidays peak.

Inaugural Ventures: MSC Virtuosa and MSC Splendida

Completing MSC’s South America cruise lineup for the 2026-27 season, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Splendida will be vital to this deployment. The MSC Virtuosa will embark on its inaugural season in Brazil, offering seven-night itineraries connecting Santos, Salvador, and Maceió. This route has been crafted to showcase the tourism potential of Brazil’s northeastern coast while providing a multi-city coastal experience that combines urban and cultural attractions with beautiful beaches.

Meanwhile, MSC Splendida returns for a second winter in the region, offering longer cruises that venture to Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay from Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. These journeys cater to international travelers and regional tourists seeking comprehensive experiences that connect multiple countries—reinforcing the ship’s reputation as a bridge for cross-border tourism between the Rio de la Plata corridor and the Brazilian coast.

Fueling Regional Economic Growth through Tourism

Industry reports indicate that cruise tourism in Latin America is set to expand at a double-digit annual growth rate through 2033, with both Argentina and Brazil standing out as rapidly developing segments. For instance, during the 2023-2024 cruise season, Argentina welcomed over 618,000 passengers, marking a substantial 17.2 percent increase from the previous year. Buenos Aires alone has seen hundreds of thousands of cruise visitors annually, contributing around 90 USD per person per day in local spending.

In Brazil, studies show that spending linked to cruise tourism—from passenger day-trips to investments in port infrastructure—has historically generated hundreds of millions of dollars, creating tens of thousands of jobs. As the key hubs, Santos and Rio de Janeiro are positioned to benefit significantly from MSC’s changes, promoting accelerated economic activity in coastal regions dependent on short-term cruise tourism for hotel occupancy and retail sales.

Aligning with National Tourism Goals

Both Brazilian and Argentine authorities place a strong emphasis on cruise tourism as a strategic element for regional growth. Investments in port infrastructure, terminal upgrades, and marketing initiatives aim to attract more substantial vessels and increased cruise traffic. MSC’s latest itinerary for the 2026-27 season aligns perfectly with these objectives, focusing deployments in key access points like Santos, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Paranaguá, and Itajaí, while also broadening routes to Maceió and Salvador, which are pivotal in Brazil’s northeastern tourism landscape.

With an emphasis on short cruises from Santos and coastal-focused journeys exclusive to Brazil, MSC Cruises is strategically responding to the Brazilian government’s initiatives to reignite domestic tourism, which has shown signs of vibrant recovery since the pandemic. The combination of expanded cruise options, newly revamped vessels, and comprehensive itineraries is poised to uplift per-capita spending and generate local economic growth in port-adjacent tourism areas, ultimately reinforcing the role of cruise travel in South America’s tourism sector.
