Brazil, Spain, and the UK Propel Aena Group’s Record Travel Growth

April 2026 marked a historic month for the Aena Group, as the aviation powerhouse saw a remarkable influx of over 33 million passengers across its airports, with significant contributions from Brazil, Spain, and the UK. This impressive growth comes in the wake of steady improvements in the global aviation market, as travelers are increasingly choosing air travel over other modes, particularly in regions like Brazil and Spain, which have experienced a surge in demand after previous disruptions.

The Aena Group, renowned for managing one of the largest networks of airports worldwide, reported an extensive total of 33.5 million passengers processed in April 2026, marking a 3.6% year-on-year increase compared to the same month in 2025. This remarkable growth is indicative of a stabilizing aviation sector and reflecting changing traveler preferences.

Spotlight on Aena Group’s Global Performance

The Aena Group operates a varied portfolio that includes 46 airports and two heliports in Spain, alongside 17 airports in Brazil and the bustling London Luton Airport in the UK. In April alone, the group facilitated 290,393 aircraft movements, up by 5.6% from the previous year. The first quarter of 2026 has also shown consistent levels of growth, reaching a total of 114.8 million passengers from January to April—a 3.7% increase year on year.

Factors such as improved safety perceptions post the significant train accident on January 18 have led to this shift towards air travel, boosting the overall numbers during the quarter and setting an optimistic tone for the remainder of the year.

Spain: A Major Driver of Aena’s Growth

Spain remains a core aspect of Aena’s impressive performance, handling an impressive 28.3 million passengers in April 2026. This reflects a 3.7% increase from the previous year, although it represents a slight decline from the stronger growth rate of 6.3% seen in the same month the year before. Aena’s Spanish airports also reported a significant 6.7% increase in aircraft movements, totaling 242,424 in April.

Among the busiest airports in Spain this past April were:

  • Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport: 5.8 million passengers (+3.3% YoY)
  • Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport: 5.1 million passengers (+4.1% YoY)
  • Palma de Mallorca Airport: 3.1 million passengers (+2.6% YoY)
  • Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport: 2.6 million passengers (+9.5% YoY)

While most airports performed commendably, Gran Canaria Airport and Tenerife Sur Airport faced declines, showing decreases of 2.8% and 8.2% respectively.

Brazil: Sustained Growth in Aviation

The Brazilian airports under Aena’s management also showcased impressive growth with 3.7 million passengers in April 2026, reflecting a steady increase of 3% compared to April 2025. Meanwhile, the airline sector managed 36,273 aircraft movements, experiencing stable traffic levels. The first four months of 2026 saw a total of 15.6 million passengers at Brazilian airports, corresponding to a solid 6.4% year-on-year growth.

Highlights from leading Brazilian airports include:

  • ANB airports: 1.3 million passengers (+4% YoY), particularly driven by Recife Airport.
  • BOAB airports: 2.3 million passengers (+2.4% YoY), led by traffic at Congonhas Airport in São Paulo.

The UK’s London Luton Continues to Thrive

London Luton Airport also celebrated a steady rise in its passenger count, accommodating 1.5 million passengers in April, a 2.5% increase year-on-year. The first quarter of 2026 brought the cumulative total to 5.3 million, reflecting a 2.8% increase as demand for flights continues to solidify in the UK.

Aena Group’s Resilient Growth Across Continents

The collective growth achieved by Aena in Spain, Brazil, and the UK underlines the group’s adaptability in overcoming global aviation challenges. As the industry moves closer to full recovery, Aena’s performance reiterates its capacity to manage increasing passenger traffic across diverse regions.

With this thriving momentum that began in April 2026, Aena Group is poised to cement its status as a pivotal entity within the global aviation sector. The shift from rail to air travel, highlighted within key markets such as Spain and Brazil, will likely continue to propel the group onward.

In summary, Aena Group’s robust performance across its airports is indicative of a solid recovery, setting a positive outlook for the future of air travel.
