Antwerp is positioning itself as a premier destination for international events, and the Antwerp Convention Bureau has recently taken significant strides in this direction. Hosting eight international association buyers, the bureau orchestrated an exclusive familiarisation trip to showcase the city’s unique strengths in gastronomy, fashion, sustainability, and event venues.
The visit highlighted Antwerp’s ambition to become a key player in the global events market and featured a carefully curated itinerary, including the prestigious MICHELIN Guide Ceremony at the historic Handelsbeurs, one of Europe’s oldest stock exchanges. This ceremony served to underline Antwerp’s blossoming reputation on the international culinary stage, showcasing the city’s dedication to combining culinary excellence with creativity and innovative storytelling.
A significant part of the agenda was dedicated to exploring BlueChem, Belgium’s first incubator focused on sustainable chemistry. Delegates engaged with various companies that are successfully blending science, sustainability, and fashion. Among the highlights were presentations on Fairbrics, a company transforming CO₂ emissions into polyester materials, and Bloom Biotech, which sources sustainable textile materials from microalgae. This unique blend of industry sectors illustrates how Antwerp’s rich industrial history and the strengths of its port and chemistry sectors contribute to shaping a sustainable future.
The familiarisation trip also embraced Antwerp’s vibrant fashion and cultural heritage. Delegates explored the MoMu Fashion Museum, devoted to the city’s profound fashion history, and participated in a sustainable fashion walk celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Antwerp Six. This engaging experience embodied the artistic spirit of Antwerp, merging its rich legacy with modern, eco-conscious fashion initiatives.
A standout feature of the trip was the exploration of Antwerp’s diverse event venues. Notable stops included A Room with a ZOO, adjacent to one of Europe’s oldest zoos. This 25,000-square-meter venue offered an extraordinary environment for events, allowing attendees to connect with nature during their engagements. The itinerary also featured Hotel FRANQ, a luxurious hotel housed in a former bank, offering a unique meeting atmosphere.
Delegates were also given a tour of the Hilton Antwerp Old Town, a venue that elegantly blends historical charm with modern functionality, ideal for events of varying sizes. The Horta Grand Café, set within the fashion district, provided a quintessential showcase of Art Nouveau architecture and contemporary design, embodying how Antwerp’s rich architectural landscape enhances its event offerings.
Moreover, participants explored Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp, a stunning botanical complex dating back to the 13th century. With 14 meeting rooms, this setting exemplifies the city’s eclectic array of event spaces. Antwerp caters to various event types with its diverse venues, from grand pillar-free ballrooms to tranquil outdoor areas, making it a perfect destination for gatherings that require a touch of elegance and enduring appeal.
Tadeja Pivc Coudyser, CEO of Antwerp Convention Bureau, expressed: “This program enabled us to unveil the many facets of Antwerp to our international guests. From the MICHELIN Awards at Handelsbeurs to innovative companies like BlueChem, the trip beautifully exhibited how meetings in Antwerp can tap into local expertise and create memorable experiences. This combination is what cements Antwerp’s status as a prime choice for associations and event organizers.”
The familiarisation journey was not merely about showcasing logistics; it was a deep dive into how Antwerp is not just a venue but an integral part of the experience. The city’s compact layout, where many venues are within walking distance, emphasized the unique quality of hosting events in Antwerp. This trip underscored how the city seamlessly interweaves gastronomy, science, sustainability, and fashion into its event narratives, providing unparalleled experiences for delegates.
Atholl Swainston-Harrison, Chief Executive of the International Artist Managers’ Association (IAMA), added: “I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Antwerp Convention Bureau and its partners for such an inspiring program. This trip has set a new standard among the familiarisation trips I’ve experienced. The culinary delights I enjoyed in Antwerp were nothing short of extraordinary.”
The Antwerp Convention Bureau’s ongoing commitment to establishing the city as a leading European hub for international meetings emphasizes its allure to organizations seeking authentic experiences, distinctive venues, and meaningful connections. With such endeavors, Antwerp continues to reinforce its reputation as a vibrant epicenter for events that are as engaging as they are unforgettable.
