In an impressive demonstration of its tourism resilience, South Korea welcomed a staggering 4.74 million international travelers during the first quarter of 2026. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone for the country’s recovery efforts post-pandemic, as the total number of foreign visitors reached its highest level ever recorded in a single quarter. A notable contributor to this surge is the influx of tourists arriving from China, which has solidified its position as South Korea’s top source of inbound travelers.
The Yanolja Research report titled “Analysis of Korea’s Inbound and Outbound Tourism Performance for Q1 2026” details an impressive growth in foreign tourism, which saw an increase of 22.6% compared to the first quarter of the previous year. Not only did this quarterly figure exceed the pre-pandemic levels of travel in 2019 by 23.4%, but it also underscores South Korea as a favored travel destination in Asia.
The Chinese tourists accounted for a significant portion of this surge, with 1.42 million visitors making their way to South Korea, demonstrating a revitalized tourism relationship between the two nations. This renewed interest from China has greatly benefitted South Korea’s economic landscape.
Moreover, South Korea’s regional airports saw a remarkable increase in travel, with 850,000 arrivals reported in the first quarter—an impressive 40.1% increase from 2019 levels. This growth significantly outpaced the 19% increase recorded at metropolitan airports in Seoul. The rising popularity of less central regions for exploration speaks to travelers’ interests in diversifying their travel experiences beyond major urban attractions.
While visitor numbers surged, average spending per tourist saw a decline. The tourism sector’s total earnings for Q1 stood at $5.84 billion (approximately 872 billion won), reflecting a 17.8% growth from 2019 figures. However, the average spending per foreign tourist dipped to $1,231 from $1,290 in 2019.
This drop in spending can significantly be attributed to changes in consumer behavior, particularly in the duty-free shopping sector. The number of shoppers at duty-free outlets fell dramatically from 4.47 million in 2019 to 2.94 million in 2026, alongside a decline in spending per shopper.
Interestingly, while foreign tourism was on the rise, outbound travel from South Korea saw 8.33 million citizens traveling abroad, which is a 5.9% increase compared to 2019. However, growth has shown signs of slowing, with recent monthly growth rates tapering off due to higher oil prices, increased airfares, and economic factors affecting exchange rates.
Despite a slowdown in outbound travel, March 2026 saw an unprecedented tourism surplus of approximately $260 million (around 388 billion won). This achievement marks the first time in over 11 years that South Korea has reported a surplus, showcasing the positive impact of increased foreign arrivals.
Nevertheless, for the entire quarter, South Korea still encountered a tourism deficit of $2.24 billion, a notable improvement from previous years, indicating a positive trend for the nation’s tourism economy.
The average expenditure for South Koreans traveling abroad also displayed growth, with spending climbing to $969 (approximately 1.44 million won), up from $914 in 2019. This indicates a propensity for travelers to invest more in their experiences while abroad.
As of Q1 2026, South Korea firmly establishes itself as a key travel destination with a record-breaking influx of 4.74 million foreign tourists, predominantly due to the revitalization of Chinese tourism. This remarkable surge not only highlights the recovery of South Korea’s tourism sector but also signals growing interest in its diverse offerings beyond major cities.
Looking ahead, while challenges persist, the strategic focus on attracting international visitors and enhancing local experiences positions South Korea favorably in the competitive tourism landscape across Asia.
