Recent findings from Agoda’s Sustainable Travel Survey conducted in 2026 reveal a significant trend among travelers in Asia toward sustainable travel experiences that benefit both nature and local communities. The survey found that 35% of tourists in the region are drawn to tours and activities with a positive environmental and community impact, while 26% strictly prefer hotels accredited with sustainability certifications.
Sustainability is becoming increasingly pivotal in the planning of travel itineraries. In 2026, a whopping 77% of Asian travelers affirmed that sustainability plays a crucial role in their travel decisions, a substantial increase from 68% in 2025. Thailand emerges as a leader in this space, with an impressive 95% of travelers prioritizing sustainable options, followed closely by Indonesia (93%), India (88%), Malaysia (88%), and Taiwan (83%). An even more promising insight is that 83% of these travelers believe sustainability will continue to be a priority over the next three years, signaling a long-term commitment to responsible tourism in the region.
At the recent GSTC Sustainable Tourism Conference in Phuket, Agoda emphasized the importance of slow travel and immersive experiences in promoting responsible tourism growth. By encouraging visits to less-trafficked destinations, travelers can help alleviate overcrowding at popular tourist spots and extend economic opportunities to smaller communities. This approach facilitates longer stays, enabling greater engagement with local cultures, supporting various hospitality businesses, artisans, and community initiatives while preserving the sustainability of well-frequented sites.
Agoda’s research indicates that travelers who return to destinations seek new experiences with every visit. Meanwhile, long-haul travelers are increasingly opting for extended stays to fully immerse themselves in the culture of their chosen locations. These shifts present a prime opportunity for travel operators to craft responsible, locally-integrated offerings that not only boost regional tourism economies but also enhance the hospitality sector while promoting responsible tourism initiatives.
The survey illustrates that travelers are increasingly motivated by the prospect of local benefits and meaningful connections. Nearly 29% of participants emphasize the importance of ensuring their travel expenditures positively impact local communities and businesses, while 28% prioritize authentic interactions with their destinations. Additionally, 38% view responsible tourism as a significant driver of economic growth for local communities, offering exciting opportunities for tourism and hospitality sectors to create impactful experiences.
Travelers are exhibiting a marked shift towards sustainable practices, with 48% opting to travel during off-peak periods to help mitigate congestion. This reflects a wider willingness to adopt responsible tourism measures while seeking out experiences that are environmentally and community-focused. Agoda’s findings indicate that travelers are eager for easily accessible and bookable sustainable options as part of their travel plans.
Agoda is actively channeling interest in responsible travel into tangible actions through its Eco Deals program, developed in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). This initiative allows travelers to support vital conservation projects while taking advantage of discounted stays. Agoda has pledged US$1.5 million toward WWF projects across ten Asian markets, offering travelers up to 15% savings until December 18, while also donating $1 to WWF for each completed booking at participating properties.
This research and corresponding initiatives from Agoda highlight the expansive benefits that sustainable travel can deliver to both the hospitality industry and local communities. By integrating eco-friendly practices and culturally enriching experiences into travel arrangements, hospitality partners stand to attract purpose-driven travelers, elevate brand reputation, and boost tourist revenue in underserved areas. The Eco Deals program further supports hotels and tour operators in tailoring their offerings in line with global sustainability timelines, ultimately enhancing community engagement, preserving natural resources, and maximizing the economic impact of tourism.
The findings from Agoda’s 2026 survey underscore a clear trend among tourists visiting Thailand, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Taiwan: a growing inclination to partake in activities that yield positive outcomes for both the environment and society. By acknowledging this demand, hospitality enterprises and tourist destinations can enhance their economic returns from tourism, uplift community welfare, and protect the environment while offering enriching experiences. Initiatives like Eco Deals reaffirm Agoda’s commitment to sustainable tourism, further advancing responsible tourism development in Asia.
