According to Agoda, during the Labor Day and Coronation Long Weekend from April 30 to May 4, interest in short trips surged compared to the previous year. Notably, Rayong emerged as a popular domestic destination, while Ho Chi Minh City topped international searches, showcasing a dual boost in both domestic and outbound tourism.
Within Thailand, destinations that are a short drive away have become frontrunners for weekend gateways. Rayong led the growth with remarkable occupancy increases of 44%, followed closely by Pattaya (40%) and Chonburi (29%). Other nearby getaways such as Ko Samet (22%) and Hua Hin/Cha-am (19%) also continue to attract eager travelers. This uptick significantly contributes to local tourism revenue, enhancing the occupancy rates of hotels, resorts, and homestays while providing support to local businesses, including restaurants and tourist attractions.
Rayong’s growing popularity can be attributed partly to agricultural tourism, featuring seasonal fruit orchards and immersive farm experiences. These offerings not only enrich the travel experience but also promote sustainable tourism and create jobs within rural communities, highlighting the extensive benefits of short-distance travel.
While short-haul trips take center stage, longer domestic routes remain enticing for travelers as well. For instance, Chiang Mai saw a substantial 28% increase, and Krabi experienced a 13% growth in interest. Longer trips typically result in greater spending per visitor, benefiting airlines, tour operators, and various sectors of the tourism industry. This balanced mix of short and longer travel options strengthens Thailand’s overall tourism economy.
The inclination towards short-distance international travel aligns with domestic trends. Nearby cities, a quick flight from Bangkok, have seen significant search activity, with Ho Chi Minh City witnessing astonishing growth of 134%. Following closely were Da Nang (58%) and Hong Kong (2%). Such short-haul trips bolster regional connectivity, enhance tourism spending abroad, and spur collaborations between Thai travel agencies and international partners, effectively enhancing Thailand’s global tourism presence.
Even further afield, destinations like Seoul stand out with a 49% increase in interest, driven by seasonal attractions. Long-distance travel, though less frequent, continues to significantly contribute to the overall tourism landscape, supporting high-end airlines and hospitality sectors.
The rise of short-distance travel is largely influenced by escalating costs and a budget-conscious mindset. Shorter trips enable travelers to cut down on transportation expenses and planning time, making travel more enjoyable and affordable. Convenience is paramount, with nearby destinations meeting the demand for quick getaways that don’t sacrifice quality.
This growing trend is prompting investments in tourism infrastructure as local governments and businesses enhance transport networks, improve accommodations, and expand local attractions to cater to the flourishing short-distance travel market. Such developments bolster the economic impact of domestic tourism and bolster regional economies.
