
On May 27, 2026, the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) inaugurated its highly anticipated new passenger departure facilities at the expanded Terminal 2 (T2). This momentous development is set to revolutionize air travel by enhancing passenger flow, increasing airport capacity, and introducing cutting-edge automation for departing travelers, amidst rising global travel demands.
The phased introduction of these new departure operations at Terminal 2 has been meticulously planned to coincide with expected surges in passenger traffic, particularly during the peak summer travel season. With the new departure hall complementing existing operations in Terminal 1, the strategy aims to alleviate congestion at security and immigration checkpoints while improving overall processing efficiency as reported by the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK).
The freshly unveiled departure facilities at Terminal 2 feature eight streamlined aisles and 160 check-in counters, catering to both traditional check-in and innovative self-service options. Travellers can now enjoy a hassle-free experience through features like Smartphone Express Bag Drop, which speeds up the entire check-in process. Self-service areas located at aisles R, S, T, and U facilitate an automated approach to check-in, enhancing passenger movement and reducing wait times.
Passengers have the flexibility to check in and drop off their bags at either staffed airline counters or through self-service kiosks, accommodating a range of personal comfort levels with automation. Following check-in, travelers will access e-Security Gates for preliminary security screening and immigration clearance before proceeding to their boarding zones.
The T2 departure hall is seamlessly integrated with various transport access points, ensuring a smooth journey for passengers arriving from all corners of Hong Kong and beyond. Direct access from the Airport Express platform allows passengers to swiftly transition to Terminal 2 without the need for additional transfers. This design significantly cuts down transfer times, making for a more efficient travel experience.
In conjunction with the rail connectivity, the addition of 29 airport bus routes now including stops at Terminal 2 expands the range of public transport options available to travelers. Taxi and private vehicle access is also facilitated with a direct drop-off area at the Terminal 2 entrance, along with a covered walkway linking Terminal 2 and Car Park 3, featuring over 1,000 public parking spaces.
After security checks, passengers at Terminal 2 can utilize an Automated People Mover (APM) to reach the boarding gates located in Terminal 1 swiftly. This rail-based transportation system minimizes travel time between the departure hall and boarding areas, greatly enhancing overall passenger comfort.
The introduction of the APM reflects HKIA’s ongoing commitment to leveraging technology for efficient passenger movement, connecting vital facilities, and improving operational flow amid large volumes of travelers.
The transition to Terminal 2 is set to occur in stages, with 15 airlines relocating their departure services, including local carriers such as HK Express Airways, Hong Kong Airlines, and Greater Bay Airlines. This strategic shift aims for completion by mid-June 2026, allowing for a balanced operational flow between the two terminals.
Prior to the grand opening, HKIA carried out a thorough full-scale passenger departure trial on May 14, 2026, to simulate real-world passenger movements and to ensure the reliability of the new operational systems. The trial included a comprehensive review of arrivals via buses and the Airport Express, check-in procedures, and the complete passage through security and immigration.
In September 2025, HKIA also unveiled a new Coach Hall at Terminal 2, enhancing integrated transport services for cross-boundary coaches and tour buses, connecting to more than 110 destinations throughout the Greater Bay Area. This service reinforces HKIA’s status as a critical regional transit hub, elevating travel efficiency for departing passengers.
The redevelopment of Terminal 2 places a strong emphasis on user experience, with a layout designed for easy navigation and reduced travel stress. Enhanced wayfinding systems, optimized passenger flow, and increased departure capacity position HKIA as a frontrunner in airport efficiency and passenger satisfaction.
