During the celebrations of China Tourism Day 2026 in Nigeria, the significance of tourism was highlighted as a key factor not only for leisure but also for job creation, diplomatic relations, cultural preservation, and economic diversification. The event, organized by the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, focused on the exploration of tourism development and investment opportunities between the two nations.
The theme of the event, “Enjoying Quality Tourism, Exploring Beautiful Landscapes”, set the stage for discussions on how tourism fosters mutual understanding and friendship across borders. Yang Jianxing, Director of the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, underscored tourism’s role as a powerful instrument for connecting communities and civilizations and linking nations through shared cultural experiences.
Cultural landmarks such as China’s Great Wall and Mount Tai, alongside Nigeria’s Osun-Osogbo Sacred Forest and Zuma Rock, serve as embodiments of each country’s rich heritage, acting as “silent messengers” that promote tourism engagement and enhance the hospitality sector’s attractiveness to both domestic and international travelers.
The fruitful cooperation between China and Nigeria has been demonstrated through initiatives like the Happy Chinese New Year celebrations and the China-Nigeria Cultural and Tourism Festivals. These programs have enriched cultural diplomacy and bolstered tourism ties. This year’s event asserted the potential for future partnerships, urging both Nigerian and Chinese travelers to explore each other’s countries, thus boosting tourism flows and contributing to the growth of both sectors.
Abdulkarim Ibrahim, the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, reflected on the 50-year relationship between Nigeria and China, noting that Nigeria could learn valuable lessons from China’s robust investments in tourism infrastructure and heritage conservation. Ibrahim emphasized that tourism serves as a vital force for cultural diplomacy and economic development, driving job creation, enhancing hospitality services, and increasing international visitor engagement, ultimately contributing to the overall growth of the tourism sector.
In a statement conveyed by Yohsnna Evandu, Director of International and Cultural Relations, the importance of tourism in promoting economic growth, cultural preservation, and international connectivity was reiterated, highlighting tourism’s role in Nigeria’s developmental strategy.
Olubumi Oluwokere, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s Social Development Secretariat, described tourism as a strategic asset for economic growth, peacebuilding, and cultural connectivity. She underlined Abuja’s extraordinary potential as a tourism hub, showcasing its diverse landscapes, vibrant arts and crafts, festivals, culinary traditions, and creative industries.
Furthermore, the Federal Capital Territory is implementing initiatives aimed at revitalizing cultural infrastructure, empowering local artists, and promoting community-driven tourism, all of which align with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. These steps are designed to stimulate inclusive growth within the tourism sector throughout the region.
Dr. Aare Fagade, Director General and CEO of NIHOTOUR, stressed that China’s tourism success provides a blueprint for Nigeria, revealing how strategic investments in heritage, infrastructure, and sustainable tourism can create jobs, attract international visitors, and enhance revenue within the sector. These insights offer a pathway for Nigeria to modernize its tourism operations, develop new destinations, and improve the overall hospitality landscape.
The discussions highlighted how tourism acts as a powerful engine for inclusive economic growth. By connecting essential heritage sites, natural landscapes, and cultural traditions, the tourism sector stimulates local businesses, hospitality services, and creative industries. These initiatives not only create jobs and foster community development but also enhance the competitiveness of the tourism sector.
Both nations are committed to deepening practical cooperation in tourism through knowledge sharing, infrastructural support, and collaborative programs. This approach aims to increase bilateral travel, strengthen cultural understanding, and promote investment in hospitality and tourism services. Such initiatives are expected to accelerate sector growth, enhance tourism infrastructure, and improve the visitor experience—all of which will benefit local economies and communities.
The 2026 China Tourism Day in Nigeria reaffirmed that tourism is an essential strategy for economic development, showcasing its ability to foster revenue growth, enhance cultural relations, and provide opportunities for all. By applying lessons learned from China’s tourism achievements, Nigeria can leverage this potential to promote sustainable growth. Through inclusivity, partnerships, and investments in tourism infrastructure and education, the importance of tourism as a tool for economic diversification and cultural diplomacy is further underscored in Nigeria.
