United Airlines Expands Its Asian Connections: New Nonstop Flights from Japan Set for Winter 2026

In a pivotal move to enhance transpacific travel, United Airlines has announced its ambitious plan to introduce new nonstop winter flights from Japan in the Winter 2026 schedule. This significant expansion aims to connect travelers from the U.S. not only to the bustling cities of Tokyo and Sapporo but also to vital destinations in Asia, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Mongolia, and Malaysia. With a growing demand for travel—to both leisure spots and business hubs—this initiative underscores United’s commitment to providing seamless access to the culturally diverse and economically vibrant Asia-Pacific region.

New Routes from San Francisco and Chicago

Central to United’s expansion are two significant transpacific routes that will cater to travelers eager for direct access to Japan:

San Francisco (SFO) to Sapporo (CTS):
Launching on December 11, 2026, United will commence seasonal nonstop flights from San Francisco International Airport to New Chitose Airport, located near Sapporo. This marks a historical achievement as the first nonstop service ever offered by a U.S. airline connecting continental America to Sapporo, a city famed for its stunning winter sports, iconic snow festivals, and delectable seafood cuisine, particularly the exquisite Sapporo ramen.

Operating three times weekly throughout winter until March 2027, these flights will be serviced by United’s state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which is renowned for its comfort and range. For travelers seeking a winter escape or a gastronomical adventure, this new route provides a direct pathway to the frosty allure of northern Japan without the hassles of lengthy layovers.

Chicago (ORD) to Tokyo-Narita (NRT):
In parallel with its Sapporo route, United will introduce daily year-round flights from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Tokyo-Narita International Airport, starting on October 24, 2026. This service will be the only nonstop offering from Chicago to Narita, enhancing travel possibilities for Midwest-based flyers. Utilizing the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, this route will complement United’s existing Chicago-Tokyo Haneda service, facilitating convenient connections to numerous destinations across the Asia-Pacific.

Unlocking a Network of Asian Destinations

United Airlines’ expanded network in Japan also opens up a myriad of onward connections through strategic partnerships, especially with All Nippon Airways (ANA), enhancing its Star Alliance offerings. Following arrival at Tokyo-Narita, travelers will have access to over 21 key destinations throughout the Asia-Pacific, including:

Cebu in the Philippines: Renowned for its beautiful beaches and dynamic urban environment.
Palau: A paradise recognized for its marine biodiversity and pristine coral reefs.
Ulaanbaatar: The capital city of Mongolia, which juxtaposes its rich nomadic past with contemporary city life.

Passengers transiting through Narita can also benefit from efficient connections to Jakarta, the vibrant capital of Indonesia, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s bustling capital city. These routes allow United and its partners to offer seamless travel options, enabling deeper access to Southeast Asia.

Impact on Tourism and Business Travel

Industry experts suggest that with this expansion, United is well-positioned to capture the increasing demand for travel between the United States and Asia, especially as popular destinations such as Tokyo and Sapporo rebound post-pandemic. United’s new route to Sapporo specifically targets the winter leisure market, catering to skiers and culinary tourists, while the Chicago–Narita connection holds promise for business travelers seeking access to Asian markets.

According to United’s Chief Network Strategists, Japan’s significance as a travel market is undeniable, and the addition of flights to both Narita and Sapporo, along with expanded connection capabilities to regions like the Philippines and Malaysia, strengthens United’s competitive stance as travel patterns normalize.

A Bright Future for Travelers

The launch of these new routes heralds exciting opportunities for travelers eager to explore Asia. Whether seeking the thrill of winter sports in Sapporo, a business meeting in Tokyo with connections to Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur, or an adventure that traverses from the Midwest of the United States to the dynamic ambiance of Manila or the breathtaking landscapes of Mongolia—these expanded routes highlight United Airlines’ commitment to bridging the gaps between cultures and economies.

In reshaping connectivity between the United States, Japan, and pivotal destinations in the Philippines, Indonesia, Mongolia, and Malaysia, United Airlines is not merely launching flights; it is redefining the landscape of international travel and amplifying its role in fostering global connections.
