The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is proud to promote the exhibition “La Mode en Majesté: Royal Thai Dress from Tradition to Modernity,” currently gracing the esteemed Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris from May 13 to November 1, 2026. This remarkable event, held under the royal patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, celebrates the 340th anniversary of the first Siamese diplomatic mission to France and marks the 170th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and France.

This exhibition not only represents a pivotal moment in cultural exchange but also stands to significantly benefit Thailand’s tourism sector. The stunning showcase is expected to draw a global audience intrigued by the rich tapestry of culture, fashion, and artistry inherent in Thai textile heritage.

Collaborative Efforts To Elevate Cultural Exchange

The exhibition is a collaborative venture between the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles (QSMT), and the Sustainable Arts and Crafts Institute of Thailand (SACIT), with the support of the Royal Thai Embassy in Paris. By uniting these institutions, Thailand aims to promote its illustrious royal textile heritage on a global stage, simultaneously encouraging tourism growth. High-profile exhibitions such as this often inspire travelers to visit Thailand to explore its rich historical sites, exquisite craftsmanship, and modern fashion landscape.

The exhibition boasts nearly 200 dresses, accessories, textiles, and photographs displayed across seven thoughtfully curated galleries. Each piece offers insight into the evolution of Thai royal dress, serving as artistic treasures and as gateways for enhancing tourism engagement.

Legacy of Queen Sirikit and Its Impact on Tourism

At the heart of this stunning exhibition is the indelible mark left by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Late Queen Mother. Her visionary approach modernized traditional Thai court attire while elevating the status of Thai textiles on the world stage. Collaborating with esteemed historians and fashion houses, including Pierre Balmain and Lesage, she established the eight canonical styles of Thai national dress, fusing cultural authenticity with a touch of global refinement.

This influential legacy has significant ramifications for tourism, as it introduces international visitors to Thai cultural identity, enticing them to explore Thailand firsthand. Tourists are drawn to experience its traditional textiles, royal palaces, and vibrant artisan workshops.

Preserving Heritage Through Royal Patronage

The exhibition underscores ongoing initiatives driven by Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana and the SUPPORT Foundation, dedicated to preserving traditional crafts and uplifting rural artisans. Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari champions contemporary Thai design and mentors emerging generations of artisans, fostering tourism opportunities linked to cultural workshops, exhibitions, and fashion events. These efforts highlight how heritage crafts are vital for sustainable economic development while attracting travelers eager for genuine cultural encounters.

A Fusion of Thai Textiles and French Haute Couture

A focal point of the exhibition is the creative synergy between Thai textile traditions and French haute couture. Visitors can admire exquisite fabrics such as Thai silk, brocade, mat mii, and intricate embroidery techniques, presented alongside sketches and haute couture pieces. By showcasing these collaborations, the exhibition reinforces Thailand’s position as a premiere destination for cultural tourism and design-focused travel, urging visitors to delve deeper into both traditional and contemporary artistic expressions.

Technical Mastery on Display

The galleries feature an array of Thai decorative arts, including lipao weaving, fan painting, and gold damascening. This focus on craftsmanship not only highlights the technical excellence behind royal Thai attire but also inspires tourism to workshops and artisan communities, allowing international guests to engage with authentic cultural experiences that support economic growth for local artisans.

Engaging Live Demonstrations

From May 13–17 and May 22–24, 2026, SACIT will hold live demonstrations at the museum. Attendees will have the opportunity to witness the intricate art of traditional Thai split-stitch embroidery and explore innovative blends of French Lunéville embroidery alongside Thai techniques. These interactive sessions serve to kindle interest among visitors, journalists, and design aficionados, reinforcing Thailand’s identity as a dynamic cultural destination and motivating explorations into cities known for textile production.

Contemporary Fashion as a Catalyst for Tourism

The exhibition culminates in a showcase of modern Thai fashion, featuring stunning outfits commissioned by Her Majesty the Queen and Her Royal Highness, alongside designs from illustrious Thai brands such as SIRIVANNAVARI, ASAVA, and TIRAPAN. By bridging heritage with modern fashion, the exhibition enriches Thailand’s tourism brand, presenting the nation as a vibrant destination where culture, craftsmanship, and contemporary design converge.

Cultural Tourism: A Path to Economic Prosperity

La Mode en Majesté goes beyond mere fashion; it serves as a catalyst for the development of Thailand’s tourism sector. Through this exhibition, global awareness of Thai culture and its distinctive textile artistry will undoubtedly expand, enticing international travelers to explore Thailand’s cultural treasures. This influx will generate crucial revenue for the tourism industry, bolster economic growth, and elevate Thailand’s profile as a cultural jewel both in Europe and worldwide. The exhibition serves as a bridge for cultural dialogue between Thailand and France, showcasing royal garments alongside the artistry of textile creation.
