What adds to the intrigue of this cinematic achievement is the filmmakers’ modest budget of only 14 million yuan. The film features a storyline delivered in the local Chaoshan dialect and is predominantly acted by non-professional talents. Despite initial skepticism from industry critics predicting dismal box office results, the film has received an outstanding viewer rating of 9.1 out of 10 from over 500,000 reviews on popular platforms. Recognized at the Cannes Film Festival, it is poised for additional international attention in the months ahead.

The film’s emotional narrative centers around qiaopi, the cherished letters and financial support sent back home by Chinese laborers and migrants in Southeast Asia, traditionally referred to as Nanyang. This poignant historical element interweaves tales of generational perseverance, showcasing two women who maintain a profound connection despite the miles that separate them. Jieyang and Chaozhou followed suit, with booking increases of 162% and 135% respectively, surpassing more traditional tourist hotspots. The Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport has effectively accommodated this influx, recently surpassing the milestone of 10 million annual passengers.
To sustain this interest, local authorities are proactively implementing strategies to transform cinematic enthusiasm into long-term economic benefits. They have introduced thematic travel routes connecting filming locations and are organizing cultural festivals emulating the movie’s traditional rituals. Retailers across the region are also offering discounts to patrons presenting cinema ticket stubs.
Beyond boosting tourism, Chaoshan is undergoing a transformation in its industrial landscape. The region boasts a vast global diaspora estimated at 15 million, whose entrepreneurial energy is crucial for local revitalization. Recent investment conventions have unveiled a progressive “New Chaoshan” strategy, focusing on diversifying economic avenues into sustainable engineering and advanced tech sectors like blockchain.
Shantou is actively developing niche industries associated with digital services and offshore wind power, aiming to establish itself as a hub for digital commerce and environmentally sustainable practices.
