Explore County Durham: New Bus Services Enhance Access to Cultural and Natural Treasures

If you’re longing to dive into rich history, stunning landscapes, and cultural marvels, County Durham is stepping up to the plate with its newly launched bus services. As part of a concerted effort by Durham County Council, the Durham Explorer network will operate three dedicated bus routes during weekends and bank holidays from May 23 to August 31.

This initiative is designed to make exploring the charms of County Durham not just easier, but also affordable and sustainable. Funded by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority, these services connect Durham City center to a plethora of attractions including museums, historic estates, gardens, castles, and spectacular natural wonders, all without needing to rely on private transportation.

Durham County Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, High Streets, Tourism and Regeneration, Councillor Karen Allison, emphasized that the new bus routes offer a fresh way for both visitors and locals to unlock the wealth of experiences available in the county. Each route opens access to historic market towns and serene countryside, catering to families looking for day trips as well as travelers from afar. The initiative aligns with regional tourism goals, which include boosting the local economy and encouraging tourists to return to County Durham and the broader North East area.

Affordable Travel for Everyone

One of the highlights of the Durham Explorer services is the affordability due to the application of the Mayor’s Fares scheme. With prices slashed, a single adult fare is a mere £2.50, while younger travelers aged 21 and under can enjoy even lower fares of just £1 per journey. This makes it an economical choice for students, young families, and those keeping an eye on their budget.

Moreover, County Durham offers excellent value with its range of day ticket options. An adult County Durham day ticket ensures unlimited travel within the region for only £6. If you want to explore even further, a regional day ticket covering both bus services and the local Metro system is priced at £7.50. Youth passengers can opt for a wider regional day ticket for just £3, and children under 11 can travel free during school holidays via the Kids Go Free initiative, which allows one adult with a valid ticket to bring along up to three accompanying children.

Each Durham Explorer bus is equipped with features to accommodate accessibility and welcomes dogs, ensuring comfort and inclusivity for all visitors.

Explore Diverse Routes

The Durham Explorer bus services include three unique routes, allowing travelers to discover different clusters of attractions:

Durham Dales Explorer (Route 873): This route offers a direct link from Durham City to The Auckland Project, a remarkable blend of galleries and heritage sites in Bishop Auckland. It continues to pass by Raby Castle, an iconic castle and estate surrounded by a moat, the charming market town of Barnard Castle, the celebrated Bowes Museum known for its superb art collections, and concludes at the breathtaking High Force Waterfall, one of England’s most stunning natural sites.

The Time Traveller Line (Route 874): Perfect for history buffs, this route connects Durham City with significant cultural sites like Ushaw Historic House, Chapels and Gardens, which holds historical and architectural importance, as well as Beamish, The Living Museum of the North. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the region’s diverse history through engaging exhibitions.

Tracks Through Time Line (Route 875): This line leads from Durham City to Shildon, where you can explore Locomotion, the flagship northern attraction of the National Railway Museum. This site provides rich insights into the evolution of rail transport and its transformative impact on society and industry.

With carefully curated routes, travelers can tailor their day trips to encompass a variety of County Durham’s attractions—balancing cultural and recreational experiences seamlessly.

Boosting Local Tourism Sustainably

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness highlighted that these new bus services not only enhance access to fantastic local attractions but also promote environmentally friendly travel habits. The initiative aims to reduce car dependency, making it more straightforward for families, residents, and tourists to enjoy the natural beauty and heritage of County Durham.

Feedback from local attractions has been overwhelmingly positive. For instance, Bethany Jackson, Head of Audiences at Ushaw Historic House, noted that the Time Traveller Line aligns seamlessly with their commitment to sustainable travel, opening up new opportunities for visitors to discover the estate’s architectural beauty and engage in seasonal events.

For travelers eager to explore using the Durham Explorer services, detailed information about routes, schedules, and ticket options can be found on the Durham County Council website. Additionally, visitors can take advantage of discounted entry at participating attractions as part of the North East Combined Authority’s Days Out by Bus scheme, which encourages everyone to choose public transport.
