The Auto Club of Southern California is predicting that approximately 3.6 million residents will embark on journeys away from home, representing a notable uptick in holiday travel. Their analysis indicates a 1% increase from last year and an impressive 8.1% rise compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Travelers are encouraged to prepare for busy roadways and crowded airports as they plan their excursions between Thursday and Monday.
Kandace Redd, a spokesperson for the Auto Club of Southern California, highlighted that the desire to travel remains robust among locals, even in light of rising fuel prices. In fact, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to drive gasoline prices higher, yet this has not dissuaded residents from hitting the road. Safety should remain a top priority, and motorists are advised to devise thorough plans to navigate potential traffic congestion while keeping safety standards in mind.

Road travel will dominate this year’s Memorial Day as an estimated 2.9 million Southern Californians opt for personal vehicles to reach their destinations. Despite the financial pressures of soaring fuel prices, the independence and flexibility provided by driving remains appealing. In addition, around 388,000 travelers are projected to choose air travel, making their way through regional airports for long-distance flights. Other modes of transport, including rail lines and buses, are also expected to accommodate approximately 279,000 travelers aiming to complete their holiday plans.
The increased travel volume is complicated by recent infrastructure issues near major transportation hubs. A damaged six-inch natural gas pipeline and an associated water main were struck during construction work in Westchester, causing delays and complications for travelers heading towards Los Angeles International Airport. Officials from Southern California Gas are working diligently to repair the damage, with efforts expected to be completed by Thursday morning. However, travel routes near the airport may remain affected due to ongoing repair work.
According to utility spokesperson Erick Rivas, the disruption resulted from an incident involving a third-party contractor. Logistical problems will likely emerge for the influx of travelers arriving at or departing from LAX, further hampering access to the airport as repairs progress. Officials anticipate that the surrounding transit networks will experience severe delays until the necessary fixes are implemented.
In anticipation of the heavy traffic expected this Memorial Day weekend, the California Highway Patrol has announced a statewide safety and enforcement initiative. Named the Holiday Enforcement Period, this program aims to enhance safety for travelers across California’s highways. The campaign will kick off at 6 p.m. on Friday and will run until 11:59 p.m. on Monday.
During this time, California Highway Patrol officers will conduct focused patrols on major routes, concentrating on enforcing seat belt laws, reducing reckless driving, and apprehending impaired drivers. The goal of this initiative is to ensure that all travelers arrive safely at their destinations amidst the busy holiday travel.
