Bahrain’s Bold Vision: Economic Growth through Tourism

Under the guidance of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Bahrain is strategically positioning its tourism sector to be a cornerstone of economic resilience. The Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) is currently in the final stages of executing its National Tourism Strategy (2022–2026), aiming to increase the tourism sector’s contribution to the national GDP from approximately 7% to a remarkable 11.4% by the end of 2026. In an effort to further innovate, the BTEA has initiated a competitive bidding process for the National Tourism Strategy (2027–2031), attracting elite global consultants to aid in Bahrain’s ambitious economic transition.

Consulting Partnerships and Visitor Growth Aspirations

Prominent advisory firms, including Oliver Wyman Limited, Arthur D. Little, and L.E.K. Consulting, have been engaged to guide the strategy development process, reflecting the ambitious vision and financial stakes of Bahrain’s tourism sector. The Kingdom has set an ambitious target to welcome 14.1 million visitors by the end of 2026, with an estimated daily expenditure of BHD 74.8 and an average stay of 3.5 days. Significant capital investments are supporting vital infrastructure projects, including the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre in Sakhir, establishing Bahrain as a key destination for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE).

Creating a Luxury Destination

The creation of high-end hospitality experiences is underway with projects like the Al Dana Theatre, the Mantis Hotel and Resort on Hawar Islands, and the Jumeirah Bahrain Bay Resort. Furthermore, developments such as the Tourist City project and the Bilaj Aljazayer Beach are diversifying the luxury offerings in Bahrain. With an emphasis on maritime tourism, the Bahrain Bay beach project and diving facilities are being expanded to boost the visitor experience. Furthermore, being named the Capital of Arab Sports Culture for 2026 adds another dimension to Bahrain’s tourism strategy, enhancing its attractiveness for sports enthusiasts.

Collaborative Efforts in the GCC Region

Bahrain’s efforts in tourism development come amidst similar initiatives across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members. Saudi Arabia has embarked on one of the most substantial hospitality expansions worldwide, with a focus on localization policies to ensure national participation in the workforce. Recently implemented initiatives in the UAE focus on showcasing Dubai as a premier destination, bolstered by strong economic contributions from the tourism sector.

Sustainable Practices and Economic Contributions

As the tourism sector continues to evolve, sustainability remains a top priority across the region. Qatar is focusing on sustainable tourism through its National Development Strategy, which emphasizes heritage and ecotourism. Oman is revitalizing its urban fabric while cherishing its cultural heritage through tourism. Meanwhile, Kuwait is enhancing its tourism appeal via digital innovations and stopover tourism, organically growing its visitor numbers.

A Vision for the Future

The collaborative efforts of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Italy, Spain, Brazil, and Australia represent not merely a response to post-pandemic recovery but a strategic realignment of global tourism towards experiences that are premium, immersive, and culturally enriched. The integration of hospitality assets within national infrastructure and sustainable urban planning is positioning tourism as a pivotal economic driver for these nations.

As 2026 approaches, the future of global tourism looks bright, encouraging travelers to explore vibrant destinations like Bahrain, which is poised to leave a lasting impression on the world stage.
