Asia Pacific Tourism Embraces Regional Travel Amid Long-Haul Decline and AI Revolution

The tourism landscape in the Asia Pacific region is experiencing a transformative phase characterized by a noteworthy shift from long-haul international travel towards shorter regional voyages. This trend is predominantly fueled by geopolitical concerns, rising travel costs, and an enhanced desire for convenience and flexibility among travellers. Simultaneously, the demand for nearby destinations is on the rise, despite an overall downturn in air travel, indicating a strong preference for short- to medium-haul experiences across the region.

According to the recent Spring/Summer 2026 Travel Pulse report by Criteo, travellers in the Asia Pacific exhibit an eagerness to explore, tempered by economic pressures and global uncertainties. Consumers are now more meticulous in their travel planning, taking longer to compare options and increasingly relying on digital tools to facilitate informed travel decisions.

The insights presented in the report stem from a comprehensive survey of over 6,000 travellers worldwide, alongside booking and browsing data from various travel providers across international markets.

The shift towards regional and short-distance travel is glaring. While the demand for air travel within Asia Pacific dipped by 17% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, interest in nearby getaways has held strong. Specifically, short-haul bookings slightly increased by 1% in April compared to the previous year, while medium-haul travel saw a rise of 1.8%. Conversely, long-haul bookings decreased by 2.8%, a clear indication of diminishing interest in prolonged international trips.

This evolving landscape indicates that travellers are increasingly prioritizing convenience, affordability, and flexibility, particularly in light of ongoing global instabilities impacting long-distance travel. Encroaching geopolitical tensions, especially in the Middle East, have further influenced travel behaviors in early 2026.

Despite the overall decline in long-haul travel, the hotel market in the region has shown solid demand, with traffic to hotel booking platforms skyrocketing in the spring months—some periods witnessing around 30% growth year-on-year.

However, the surge in online browsing has resulted in a more cautious approach among consumers when finalizing their bookings. Notably, there was a 10% drop in conversion rates for online travel agencies during the first quarter of 2026, indicating that travellers are now spending additional time thoroughly evaluating travel products prior to making a commitment.

The report highlighted that, on average, travellers review a staggering 25 hotel listings before reaching a decision on accommodation. This underscores the increasing significance of detailed content, competitive pricing, and credible customer reviews in influencing travel choices.

In fact, about 66% of surveyed travellers indicated that guest reviews are the most critical factor while comparing hotels, airlines, and booking services, pointing towards a broader shift in traveller expectations where transparency and trustworthy information are as vital as pricing or destination allure.

Additionally, the report indicates that the booking cycle in the Asia Pacific is extending. Travel bookings exhibited stronger week-on-week performance compared to retail sales between July and October 2025, indicating that visitors are planning their journeys further in advance rather than limiting themselves to peak travel seasons.

This prolonged demand cycle is nudging travel brands to look beyond seasonal promotions, encouraging them to implement year-round marketing strategies that maintain visibility and capture consumer attention throughout the travel planning process.

Moreover, artificial intelligence is increasingly transforming the way travellers plan their journeys. The report indicates that the Asia Pacific region is at the forefront of global adoption of AI-powered travel planning tools. This trend is especially pronounced in countries like Japan and South Korea, where almost half of the travellers utilize AI tools to navigate their entire travel planning process—from destination research to itinerary creation, accommodation comparisons, and personalized travel recommendations.

Interestingly, AI-driven platforms, such as ChatGPT, are progressively reshaping consumer engagement by significantly increasing traffic to booking platforms, surpassing traditional search engines by 13 percentage points in March 2026. This demonstrates the significant impact AI tools are having on the tourism landscape.

A considerable 72% of Criteo’s travel clients noted receiving at least one booking referral linked to ChatGPT traffic, showcasing how AI is becoming a crucial determinant in consumer purchasing decisions within the travel sphere.

As a result, it is expected that travel brands will need to reassess their digital approach. The integration of AI-powered search and recommendation tools will necessitate a focus on delivering precise product information, high-quality content, and visibility across AI-enhanced platforms as critical competitive advantages moving forward.

In summary, Asia Pacific’s travel sector is entering a new era shaped by digital innovation, shifting consumer priorities, and the omnipresent influence of artificial intelligence. As regional explorations and personalized travel planning gain traction, tourism businesses in this dynamic region are likely to invest more heavily in data-driven marketing, AI-assisted engagement, and flexible travel offerings to meet the evolving expectations of consumers.
