Taiwan is set to redefine high-speed travel with the introduction of its cutting-edge N700ST bullet trains, a project led by the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation in collaboration with the Hitachi Toshiba Supreme Consortium. This initiative will introduce 12 new state-of-the-art trainsets, comprising 144 cars, to enhance Taiwan’s key north-south rail corridor, optimizing travel speeds up to 300 km/h and increasing passenger capacity between the bustling cities of Taipei and Kaohsiung.
The N700ST trains will bolster Taiwan’s high-speed railway network, seamlessly linking crucial locations including Nangang, Taipei, Banqiao, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, and Zuoying. The collaboration with Hitachi involves a substantial investment of approximately 124 billion Japanese yen. These innovative bullet trains are based on the advanced N700S Shinkansen platform from the Central Japan Railway Company, with the first deliveries expected to commence in 2026 and operations set to begin in 2027.
Designed to be lighter and more aerodynamic than the current 700T models, the N700ST trains will feature compact traction systems and advanced energy-efficient technologies, including silicon carbide devices and blower-less cooling systems. Additionally, these trains will be equipped with lithium-ion batteries, allowing for low-speed movement in the event of a power outage.
In terms of passenger experience, comfort will be significantly elevated. Each seat will come with a 110V charging socket, vibrant full-color LCD information displays, arrival notifications, and convenient two-tier luggage racks.
