In a bold initiative aimed at revitalizing regional rail travel, Germany is set to launch new battery-electric trains, built by CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles), designed specifically for the Niederrhein-Münsterland network. The unveiling took place at the VRR Niederrhein Conference 2026 held in Neuss, attended by over 150 stakeholders from various sectors, including politics and transportation, all eager to discuss the future of mobility in the region.
This significant development is part of Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR)’s commitment to transitioning to sustainable transport solutions. The introduction of these new trains marks an essential step towards replacing diesel-powered operations with cleaner, emission-free travel, thereby enhancing both environmental and travel standards.

The new fleet of Battery-Electric Multiple Units (BEMUs) promises a cleaner mode of transport, as these trains are capable of operating on non-electrified rail lines and can switch to battery power when necessary, utilizing an integrated energy storage system. This feature is particularly advantageous for regions with mixed rail networks that include both electrified and non-electrified sections.
According to CAF, the Civity BEMU model harnesses rechargeable batteries for operations on non-electrified routes and can recharge while traversing electrified sections. This innovative technology enables Germany to pursue sustainable rail travel more effectively, ensuring connectivity while minimizing reliance on diesel engines.
The Niederrhein-Münsterland network plays an integral role in VRR’s long-term transport strategies. Covering ten key local rail lines that collectively account for over eleven million train kilometers each year, the project is set to improve various routes, such as the RE 10 from Kleve to Düsseldorf and RE 14 from Essen to Borken. The enhancements will facilitate easier travel for daily commuters, students, and tourists alike, fostering regional connectivity and tourism.
Confirmed by VRR, CAF has been awarded a contract to supply 76 BEMU trains in two sizes. This includes 15 units measuring approximately 45 meters with a capacity of 122 seats and 61 units around 55 meters long, able to accommodate 160 seats. Beyond manufacturing and delivering these advanced trains, CAF will also manage their maintenance throughout their operational lifecycle.
This increase in passenger capacity is expected to alleviate crowding on busy routes and enhance travel comfort, aligning with VRR’s objective of delivering an improved travel experience across North Rhine-Westphalia.
Passengers will benefit significantly from the new CAF-built trains, featuring several modern conveniences. With spacious entrance areas for easier boarding, comfortable padded seating, areas designed for multi-use, plus facilities for passengers with reduced mobility, this design emphasizes accessibility. Additional amenities such as power points, free Wi-Fi, and folding tables will cater to both commuters and tourists, enriching the overall travel experience.
Furthermore, the trains are designed to operate at speeds of up to 140 kilometers per hour, making travel across the region swift and efficient. VRR is focused on not only sustainability but also on ensuring that passengers can expect comfort and modernity in their rail journeys.
VRR’s approach also includes a specific focus on battery range and recharging plans tailored to different segments of the network. The strategy varies depending on the number of electrified tracks and other operational requirements. For example, certain routes necessitate a battery range of up to 220 kilometers, complemented by designated charging stations to enhance operational flexibility.
Transitioning from diesel to battery-electric trains will also require necessary upgrades to infrastructure, including station modernization. As part of the development, VRR aims to enhance platforms and create accessible environments that facilitate better passenger experiences, notably aiming for barrier-free access at numerous stations.
This ambitious project led by Germany’s VRR exemplifies how regional transport can evolve towards sustainability without the immediate need for full electrification. By integrating CAF’s new battery-electric trains into the Niederrhein-Münsterland network, Germany is signaling a significant advancement in rail travel—making it not only cleaner and quieter but also increasing capacity and improving access to regional travel.
As this initiative progresses, passengers can look forward to more available seating, improved accessibility, modern conveniences, and a reduced environmental footprint. For towns and cities across North Rhine-Westphalia, this project represents a strengthening of regional connections, enabling more residents and visitors to explore all that the region has to offer through efficient and eco-friendly rail travel.
