Derry Station Achieves Milestone: One Million Rail Passengers in a Record Year for Tourism

Derry Station has marked a significant milestone by welcoming over one million rail passengers during the 2025-26 period, according to recent data released by Translink, highlighting the station’s vital role for both local commuters and tourists eager to explore this historic riverside city. This achievement represents an 8% increase, translating to approximately 77,000 more journeys than the previous year, showcasing a growing affinity for rail travel.

Known officially as Derry ~ Londonderry railway station and marketed as the North West Transport Hub, this key station is situated on the eastern bank of the River Foyle, serving as the end point of the Belfast–Derry line operated by Northern Ireland Railways. Previously one of the busiest stations in the network, with 952,126 passengers recorded in 2023-24, the latest figures indicate a significant rise in demand, elevating rail travel trends beyond pre-pandemic levels across Ireland.

From Threatened Closure to Vibrant Tourism Gateway

The recent milestone underscores a remarkable turnaround from two decades ago when the Derry line faced potential closure due to years of inadequate investment. Campaigners from Into The West highlight that despite modest improvements to infrastructure and services, passenger numbers via Derry have more than tripled over the last ten years as more travelers prefer rail over road for their journeys.

The Waterside station has undergone a £27 million redevelopment, transforming the Victorian building into a contemporary transport hub while preserving its historical essence. Just a short stroll from the medieval city walls and the stunning Peace Bridge, this hub not only serves commuters but also acts as a welcoming entry point for tourists arriving from Belfast, eager to explore the region’s coastal beauty, rich culture, and flavorful culinary scene.

A Rising Trend in Irish Rail Travel

The increase in Derry’s passenger numbers is reflective of a broader trend in rail travel across Ireland, with Translink, Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail), and Dublin’s Luas tram system all witnessing a resurgence in ridership compared to pre-pandemic statistics. This trend aligns with a growing preference for low-carbon travel options that connect cities like Belfast and Derry, as well as providing further cross-border routes into the Republic of Ireland. For visitors, this means easier access to combine urban adventures with scenic coastal and countryside escapes.

However, campaigners point out that not every area is benefitting equally, as seven stations in Belfast are currently experiencing lower passenger numbers than before the pandemic. They argue this disparity emphasizes the necessity of targeted investments, attractive service schedules, and collaborative marketing with tourism organizations to tap into the potential demand in regions like the north-west.

Addressing the Service Frequency Gap West of the Bann

Despite the record-breaking figures, train services between Coleraine and Belfast are more frequent than those on the entire Derry–Belfast route. The three stations located west of the River Bann—Castlerock, Bellarena, and Derry—currently have fewer services overall. According to campaigners, these stations recorded 2,600 fewer train movements last year compared to the remainder of the line, underscoring the necessity for improved service frequency to meet the rising demand at Derry’s Waterside station.

Steve Bradley, chair of Into The West, estimates that simply matching the service frequency of stations east of the Bann could cost around £1 million per year, but it would likely draw thousands more passengers to Derry’s bustling hub. He believes that the latest passenger statistics not only validate the resilience of the line but also reveal significant potential for future growth in leisure and tourism travel, provided that enhancements to timetables are prioritized.

A Scenic Rail Journey with Global Appeal

The Belfast–Derry line is often labeled as one of Ireland’s most picturesque rail journeys, featuring stretches that meander along stunning beaches, rugged sea cliffs, and the sweeping landscapes of the River Foyle. Recent collaborative efforts by tourism and transport authorities have actively promoted the route as a sustainable travel option to experience various attractions, including the breathtaking Causeway Coast and the historic walled city of Derry, encouraging visitors to opt for rail travel over car rentals.

At Waterside, the North West Transport Hub integrates local bus and coach services, facilitating onward travel to destinations such as Donegal, the breathtaking Inishowen Peninsula, and the Wild Atlantic Way. This accessibility enhances Derry’s position as a central gateway to both Northern Ireland and the Republic. The hospitality sector sees this one million passenger milestone as a prime opportunity to develop campaigns around rail-inclusive short stays, festivals, and various events, capitalizing on easy access via Belfast’s Grand Central station.

Looking Ahead to Derry’s Rail Future

For the residents of Derry, the remarkable year at the Waterside station affirms years of dedicated local advocacy, demonstrating that with reliable and well-managed train services, the community will embrace rail travel, both for daily commutes and as an inviting route for newcomers discovering the city. With passenger numbers exceeding the million mark and increasing calls to improve service frequency west of the Bann, hopes are high that this transport hub will continue to flourish as a crucial link for both daily commuters and visitors seeking to explore the captivating landscapes of the north-west by rail.
