Set against the vibrant backdrop of Shanghai, ITB China 2026 marked a significant milestone in the global travel landscape, attracting over 23,500 attendees during its three-day run. This prestigious event combined a mixture of business negotiations, destination sharing, and strategic dialogue, highlighting China’s evolving role in international tourism. The gathering served as a pivotal platform for fostering collaboration and advancing global travel initiatives.

The event was characterized by more than 44,000 business meetings, illustrating a robust level of interaction between exhibitors and travel professionals. This high level of engagement reflects a renewed confidence within the travel sector, showcasing a strong desire among global travel partners to reconnect, rebuild, and explore new opportunities in international travel.

Global Participation Showcases Expanding Reach

With representation from over 900 travel organizations across 85 nations and regions, ITB China 2026 reiterated its international appeal. The event welcomed 1,700 hosted buyers, encompassing both Chinese outbound travel professionals and international buyers, while 280 media representatives and thought leaders underscored the event’s substantial industry impact. Notably, participation spanned the entire travel spectrum, featuring national tourism boards, hotels, transport services, airlines, and various firms in travel technology and services.

Diversity in participation was particularly significant, with exhibitors from Europe, Asia, the Americas, and the Caribbean, as well as the Middle East and Africa. Asia demonstrated remarkable growth, boasting a 40% increase in representation year-on-year, driven by a strong Malaysian delegation of over 60 organizations, including Sarawak and Malaysia Airlines. Türkiye showcased a notable presence with a 93% increase, promoting key destinations like Cappadocia and Trabzon.

In addition, representations from the Americas and the Caribbean soared by 26%, with contributions from Brazil, Peru, and Mexico, among others. European exhibitors increased by 20%, with countries such as Italy, Greece, and Spain enhancing their visibility and promoting their tourism assets collectively through the European Travel Commission. Africa saw an 11% increase as well, with national tourism boards from Morocco, Egypt, and South Africa taking part.

Engagement of Top Buyers Drives Business Success

A focal point of ITB China 2026 was the engagement of hosted buyers, who hailed from all 31 provincial-level regions in mainland China, including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. Among these, 34% were primarily interested in themed, customized, and luxury travel solutions, while 25% focused on meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE). This indicates a growing mid- to high-end travel demand. International hosted buyers from 27 countries also participated, contributing roughly 10% to the overall buyer demographic.

The interactions between buyers and exhibitors culminated in over 44,000 business meetings, generating various cooperation opportunities and valuable discussions. Industry leaders highlighted these exchanges as strategically vital for understanding market dynamics and sharing insights across competitive landscapes.

Insightful Conference Programs and Networking Opportunities

In conjunction with the exhibition, the ITB China Conference 2026 attracted over 180 senior industry professionals, corporate leaders, and tourism specialists. The program covered eight key industry topics, including Sino-EU tourism dialogue, outbound and inbound tourism from China, luxury travel, themed travel, and innovations in travel technology. Each segment focused on developing strategies for unified growth and addressing the evolving travel landscape.

The Sino-EU discussions aimed to foster bilateral cooperation, while segments on outbound and inbound travel explored traveler profiles and destination marketing tactics. Sessions dedicated to luxury and specialized travel examined integration with lifestyle trends, while MICE covered corporate travel dynamics. Innovations in travel technology showcased how developments in digital transformation are reshaping the future of travel products and services.

Beyond structured sessions, ITB China 2026 offered vibrant networking events aimed at nurturing professional relationships across the travel sector. Cultural evenings, networking luncheons, and themed workshops provided platforms for knowledge exchange and discussions on destination marketing, highlighting how such engagements extend beyond formal exhibition settings.

Industry Reflections and Future Vision

Throughout the event, industry leaders echoed the significance of ITB China as a catalyst for strategic collaboration. Both national and international representatives hailed the event’s role in strengthening global travel connections, fostering sector growth, and addressing emerging travel trends.

As ITB China 2026 concluded, excitement turned toward ITB China 2027, scheduled from May 25 to 27, which will celebrate the event’s tenth anniversary. Anticipation is high for new opportunities to deepen engagement between China and international travel markets. Early registration incentives are available for exhibitors securing their spots before June 30, 2026.

Additionally, the broader ITB series will continue with ITB India, taking place from September 1 to 3 in Mumbai, emphasizing the wealth of opportunities within the Indian travel market and fostering collaboration across Asia.
