TAP Air Portugal Reintroduces Year-Round Flights from Lisbon to Athens, Boosting Tourism and Connectivity

TAP Air Portugal is set to revive direct flights between Lisbon and Athens starting from July 1, 2026. This much-anticipated service marks the reinstatement of direct connections between the capitals of Greece and Portugal for the first time since 2012. The airline successfully operated this route from 2011 to 2012, making it the first direct link ever between the two nations. This revival comes as passenger traffic between Greece and Portugal reached unprecedented levels in 2025 and continues to grow in early 2026, according to data from Athens International Airport (AIA).

Year-Round Flights Enhancing Connectivity

The new service will operate five times a week, ensuring year-round connections between Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport and Athens International Airport. Throughout the summer months, TAP will deploy Airbus A320neo aircraft, while Embraer E190 planes will take over during the winter seasons to optimize capacity.

Flights will depart from Lisbon on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 21:30, arriving in Athens at 03:40 the following day. Return services from Athens will leave on Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 04:40, landing in Lisbon at 07:15 local time. This reliable, year-round service aims to provide travelers with enhanced access, stimulating both leisure and business tourism and reinforcing the economic and cultural ties between Greece and Portugal.

Lisbon as a Key Hub Connecting Continents

Paolo Zocconali, the Marketing Manager at TAP Air Portugal, underscored Lisbon’s strategic role as a hub linking Europe to North and South America. TAP plans to maintain year-round operations while adjusting aircraft size in winter to align with travel demand. This strategy allows travelers from Athens to efficiently connect to onward flights to the Americas, Africa, and the Iberian Peninsula, enhancing Greece’s significance in the global tourism network.

Boosting Tourism Growth Across Regions

Ioanna Papadopoulou, Director of Communications & Marketing at AIA, remarked that this route will enhance accessibility to Lisbon, establishing new travel routes for international visitors. Connecting Athens and Lisbon enables travel opportunities across the Mediterranean, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, contributing to the anticipated tourist growth in Greece and promoting cross-border leisure, cultural, and business exchanges. The new connection reaffirms Greece’s status as a Mediterranean hub and provides the enhanced connectivity needed to drive up visitor numbers, tourism spending, and local economic development.

A Modern Fleet for Sustainable Travel

TAP Air Portugal has made significant investments in modernizing its fleet, featuring one of the youngest in the industry, which includes advanced aircraft models such as the Airbus NEO family (A320neo, A321neo, A321LR, A330neo) and regional TAP Express planes. This modern fleet not only prioritizes fuel efficiency and passenger comfort but also empowers the airline to sustainably expand its routes and tourism connectivity.

Established in 1945, TAP serves as Portugal’s flag carrier and is a member of the Star Alliance. The airline operates over 1,000 weekly flights to 75 destinations across Europe, Africa, North America, and Latin America. TAP has also been recognized as one of the top 20 safest airlines for 2026 by AirlineRatings.com and has earned multiple World Travel Awards for its commitment to service excellence.

The Future of Tourism with the New Athens–Lisbon Route

The return of TAP Air Portugal is set to bolster tourism in both Greece and Portugal by:

  • Increasing inbound tourism to Athens from Portugal and facilitating broader international connections.
  • Enhancing outbound travel from Greece to destinations in Portugal, Africa, and the Americas.
  • Encouraging multi-destination travel, utilizing Lisbon as a pivotal hub for journeys across Europe and the Atlantic.
  • Fostering business and cultural tourism by connecting two historic capitals and their regions.

This new route supports seasonal and year-round travel, enabling airlines, hotels, and local tourism enterprises to strategize for sustainable growth and increased tourist volumes.

Strengthening Ties and Encouraging Tourism Growth

The relaunch of the Athens-Lisbon flight marks not just a return but a significant stride in enhancing travel within Europe and the Mediterranean. This expanded network of TAP Air Portugal plays a pivotal role in promoting cultural interaction and travel opportunities between Athens and numerous destinations globally, particularly those across the Mediterranean.
