Riga Airport Enhances Traveler Experience with New Global Partnerships

In today’s travel landscape, airports have transcended their traditional roles as mere gateways for flights, emerging as vibrant cultural and retail hubs. RIX Riga Airport, a standout within the Baltic region, is preparing for a significant enhancement of its passenger experience, promising travelers an improved and more engaging environment.

The airport has successfully concluded a much-anticipated international tender process focused on the management of its commercial areas. As a result, some of the world’s most reputable operators in travel retail and hospitality will take part in a transformative project set to launch on January 1, 2027.

This initiative reflects more than just a change in retail strategy; it’s a strategic move that aligns with Latvia’s Public-Private Partnership Law. With the introduction of these global partners, Riga Airport aims to elevate passenger services while paving the way for significant developments, including the upcoming expansion of the passenger terminal and the ambitious RIX Airport City project.

Introducing New Global Partners at RIX

The tender was organized into four strategic categories, allowing specialized operators to enhance different aspects of the passenger experience.

Commercial Lot Selected Operator Key Brand / Concept
Duty-Free Retail & Food & Beverage Dufry International AG (Avolta) Avolta Integrated Shopping & Dining
Convenience Retail TheMillerGroup (Malta) WHSmith Franchise
Business Lounge Services TAV Latvia Operation Services Primeclass Brand

Transforming Duty-Free and Dining: Avolta’s Approach

Dufry International AG, operating under its Avolta brand, has secured the contract for duty-free retail and food & beverage services. Known for its innovative approach, Avolta brings together the latest in digital enhancement and personalized service, reinventing how travelers dine and shop within the airport — making it a destination rather than a waiting area.

Convenience Retail: WHSmith Enters the Scene

Entrusted with introducing the WHSmith franchise to Riga’s airport is TheMillerGroup of Malta. This addition will provide passengers with a range of essentials, snacks, and quality reads, all while ensuring a seamless shopping experience, perfect for travelers on the go.

Premium Experience: Enhanced Business Lounges

For travelers seeking comfort and a productive environment, TAV Latvia Operation Services will manage the business lounge under the highly regarded Primeclass brand. This continuity guarantees an upgrade in service, allowing guests to unwind or work away from the terminal’s bustle.

Emphasizing Local Identity and Global Expertise

While bringing on international players like Avolta and WHSmith signifies an upgrade in scale and sophistication, Riga Airport aims to retain its local heritage. The leadership is dedicated to incorporating Latvian culture and products into the shopping landscape.

“The caliber of our new partners elevates the airport’s standards, drives innovation, and enhances the passenger experience with a diverse, modern offering,” said Laila Odiņa, Chairperson of the Board at Riga Airport. “This has a serious impact on increasing revenue from non-aviation activities and bolstering our competitiveness regionally and internationally.”

Crucially, the tender requirements mandated that bidders showcase Latvia’s distinct heritage, weaving local manufacturers and native brands into their commercial designs and branding. This integration ensures that travelers enjoy a taste of Latvia, promoting local businesses while adding to the airport’s cultural appeal.

As confirmed by Arturs Saveļjevs, Member of the Board overseeing commercial affairs, the selected proposals successfully met these priorities. In succeeding layouts, passengers will encounter an authentic reflection of local artistry and produce, ensuring Riga Airport remains a unique representation of Baltic identity as opposed to a generic transit space.

Looking Forward: 2027 and Beyond

The current concession established with SIA TAV Latvia ends in 2026, with new operations expected to begin on January 1, 2027. This timeline aligns perfectly with the airport’s broader infrastructural ambitions.

Plans are underway for an extensive terminal expansion, with a projected growth of 30,000 square meters. The commercial areas will see a substantial upgrade, with expressive dining experiences set to nearly triple in size, catering to a diverse range of culinary choices.

By forging these partnerships now, Riga Airport is ensuring that its commercial offerings will evolve alongside its physical upgrades, reinforcing its ambition to emerge as Northern Europe’s leading passenger-centered transit hub.
