Introducing PreSecure: Revolutionizing Security Screening at Bengaluru's Kempegowda Airport

In a move designed to enhance the travel experience for passengers, Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru is currently piloting an innovative service called PreSecure. This initiative allows travellers to book security screening slots ahead of their arrival at Terminal 1, aiming to alleviate waiting times and streamline passenger movement at one of India’s busiest airports. By offering this service free of charge during the trial period, Kempegowda Airport hopes to not only improve the flow of passengers but also set a precedent for airports across the country.

Understanding PreSecure and Its Functionality

The PreSecure service, developed by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), allows travellers to choose and reserve security screening time slots before they reach the airport. Passengers who utilize the BLR Pulse mobile app can select their desired time, ensuring they are directed to a dedicated security lane when they arrive, substantially reducing their time spent in queues.

To take advantage of PreSecure, travellers need to download the BLR Pulse app, scan their boarding pass, select the option to Reserve your T1 security slot, and pick from available time slots. Reservations can be made up to 75 minutes prior to departure. Dedicated lanes for PreSecure users have been established near check-in counter 86 in Terminal 1, particularly useful during peak travel hours when queues are typically longer.

In collaboration with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which oversees security operations at the airport, PreSecure is designed to eliminate uncertainty surrounding wait times. While the service is currently offered free of charge, BIAL is exploring the possibility of a paid model upon the conclusion of the pilot.

Testing the Waters at Terminal 1

The PreSecure service is being trialed at Terminal 1, which manages a significant number of domestic flight takings, including airlines like IndiGo, Akasa Air, SpiceJet, and Alliance Air. Recent infrastructural upgrades to the terminal, encompassing additional security lanes and improved check-in facilities, have been implemented in line with this innovative initiative, paving the way for enhanced passenger throughput.

Officials at the airport assert that the new dedicated security lane for PreSecure users is already yielding benefits by better distributing passenger flow. This endeavor aims to relieve stress for travelers who need clarity on how much time they should allocate for security checks. Reservation systems similar to PreSecure have been effectively adopted by numerous prominent global airports, such as Berlin’s BER Runway program, aligning with a larger ambition of modernizing airport operations worldwide.

Experts highlight that PreSecure empowers travellers to exert greater control over their airport experiences, facilitating more precise planning around arrival times and the security inspection process. As unpredictability often accompanies airport wait times, particularly during morning and evening rush hours, the ability to pre-book screening slots holds immense value for many passengers.

Passenger Benefits and Operational Enhancements

The foremost advantage of the PreSecure system is a marked decrease in time spent in security lines. Since passengers will be able to bypass conventional queue systems by heading directly to their dedicated lane at the chosen time, this not only speeds up individual journeys but also alleviates congestion at key airport bottlenecks.

For passengers, having a reserved slot offers peace of mind, particularly for those who have time constraints or are navigating a new airport. Users have shared that the availability of a fixed time for security clearance diminishes uncertainty and enables them to arrive closer to their departure times without the worry of missing their flights.

Moreover, PreSecure’s reliance on data allows airport authorities to better understand passenger movement trends, enabling BIAL to optimize staffing levels and resources at security checkpoints. This strategic deployment of resources, supported by slot reservations, ensures peak traffic can be managed without overwhelming existing security personnel.

Integrating PreSecure Into Broader Airport Innovations

PreSecure is one of several advancements Kempegowda International Airport has unveiled to enhance the journey for its passengers. The airport has also launched a new security zone at Terminal 1 to bolster throughput and better assist passengers who may require special help. With expanded screening infrastructure and multiple lanes available, the airport aims to minimize delays.

Having served millions of passengers in recent years, Kempegowda International Airport continues to position itself as a pivotal aviation hub in India by investing in technological and operational improvements. These efforts encompass priority security services, advancement in check-in technologies, and the adoption of contactless processing to facilitate smoother passenger experiences at checkpoints.

While currently confined to Terminal 1, there are plans to extend PreSecure to Terminal 2, which accommodates both international and additional domestic flights, contingent on positive passenger feedback and solid operational data supporting broader implementation. Stakeholders indicate that long-term goals would also focus on scalability and integrating the service across multiple terminals.

Addressing Challenges and Looking Ahead

As with any novel service, PreSecure must navigate various logistical and operational hurdles. Effectively coordinating a dedicated lane within the existing security framework demands meticulous planning to avoid disrupting passenger flow. Furthermore, ticketed travellers must familiarize themselves with the system to ensure they can book their slots in advance and arrive punctually for their reservations.

Airport management must also balance the advantages of reserved slots while maintaining overall efficiency. It is crucial that passengers opting not to use PreSecure not face prolonged waits in the standard security lines due to the introduction of this new system. Continuous evaluation, feedback collection, and adjustments will be essential as the service moves beyond its pilot phase.

Nevertheless, industry professionals view PreSecure as a promising advancement in boosting airport efficiency and enhancing the passenger experience — a sentiment echoed in similar initiatives pursued by airports across the globe with a focus on priority access systems.

Kempegowda International Airport’s PreSecure pilot represents a noteworthy development in the realm of security screening, enabling passengers at Terminal 1 to reserve and access dedicated security screening slots through the BLR Pulse app. As the trial is currently complimentary and future expansions are on the horizon, PreSecure presents the potential to become a staple solution, significantly reducing wait times and elevating travel predictability for flyers. Both airport authorities and travellers will be keenly observing passenger feedback and operational results as the service evolves.
