As India solidifies its status as a leading global travel market, Malaysia has set its sights on attracting over 2.1 million Indian tourists by 2026. This ambitious target is part of a comprehensive strategy designed to tap into the growing demand for international travel from India, aiming to leverage Malaysia’s appeal as a premier destination. In 2025 alone, India saw a remarkable rise in arrivals, reaching 1.56 million, marking a substantial 14.6% increase from the previous year. This surge has prompted Malaysia to enhance its tourism initiatives, aligning them with the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026 events.
Central to this effort is Malaysia’s robust air connectivity, with hundreds of direct flights connecting 14 Indian cities to the Malaysian mainland. A key component of this strategy is the recent Sales Mission 2026 in Bengaluru, which aims to foster stronger trade partnerships and expand various tourism segments in order to convert the increasing travel demand into lasting visitor inflows.

The Sales Mission 2026 aimed directly at South India signifies Malaysia’s commitment to engaging this rapidly growing outbound travel market. The Mission highlighted a collaborative effort between the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) and various key partners in the travel trade from Karnataka and beyond.
Malaysia’s delegation, led by Tourism Malaysia Chairman Datuk Manoharan Periasamy and Mdm Nuwal Fadhilah binti Ku Azmi, the Senior Director of the International Promotions (Asia/Africa) Division, underscored the importance of South India as a vital area for growth. The initiative seeks to deepen commercial relationships and boost awareness of Malaysia’s diverse tourism products.
In terms of arrival numbers, India played a critical role in Malaysia’s tourism landscape, boasting 1,565,194 visitors in 2025, a significant increase from 1,365,387 in 2024. As Malaysia aims to more than double its visitor numbers in the upcoming years, it is positioning Indian travelers as a critical factor in its tourism recovery strategy post-COVID-19.
A key enabler of this growth potential lies in strong air travel connections between the two nations. Currently, there are 238 direct flights per week linking 14 Indian cities to Malaysia, offering approximately 47,399 seats weekly. The South Indian region alone accounts for 151 of those flights and approximately 29,541 seats, reinforcing its standing as a crucial influencer in the tourism dynamics of Malaysia.
Cementing these travel trends, the Consul General of Malaysia in Chennai, K Saravana Kumar, highlighted that tourism is a strategic pillar in the bilateral relations between India and Malaysia. The consulate has been actively facilitating partnerships and promotional campaigns across South India to enhance outbound travel connections.
The collaborative efforts between the consulate and Malaysian tourism authorities focus on strengthening awareness of the destination, improving trade linkages, and fostering deeper cooperation between both nations. Strategies such as sales missions and business networking initiatives are pivotal in encouraging cooperation among tour operators, airlines, and hotel stakeholders.
Integral to the Sales Mission was the presentation of Malaysia’s diverse tourism offerings. Datuk Manoharan Periasamy emphasized that the focus has shifted beyond traditional leisure tourism, embracing a wider spectrum of experiences tailored specifically for Indian travelers. These new offerings include family vacations, island getaways, shopping tourism, cultural exploration, and eco-adventures.
In addition, specialized segments such as MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) and destination weddings are increasingly popular among Indian travelers who seek premium and bespoke travel experiences.
Mdm Nuwal Fadhilah binti Ku Azmi expressed that the goal of the Mission was to cultivate direct engagement between Malaysian tourism sellers and Indian travel partners. She espoused that Bengaluru is a strategically significant market and reinforced Malaysia’s dedication to introducing innovative tourism offerings, fresh destinations, and enriched travel experiences leading into 2026.
Insights from Hishamuddin Mustafa, Director of Tourism Malaysia Chennai, reiterated that Bengaluru stands as one of South India’s most prolific outbound travel hubs. There is steady demand across multiple sectors including leisure, luxury travel, corporate travel, weddings, and MICE tourism, reflecting the city’s rich and varied travel demographic.
The Sales Mission acted as a crucial platform, equipping Indian trade partners with vital knowledge concerning destinations, product offerings, and commercial opportunities, ahead of the anticipated travel surge in 2026.
The collaborative initiative is further bolstered by aviation partnerships, with Batik Air serving as the Official Airline Partner for the Sales Mission 2026, enhancing the connectivity and travel options available to tourists between India and Malaysia, thereby supporting the overarching tourism growth strategy of the nation.
This initiative exemplifies Malaysia’s commitment to transforming the growing Indian outbound demand into consistent tourism growth through enhanced connectivity, targeted marketing, and increasingly robust trade partnerships. It reflects a broader ambition to establish Malaysia as the preferred Southeast Asian destination for Indian travelers ahead of 2026.
Tourism Malaysia has reiterated its long-range commitment to collaborating closely with Indian travel stakeholders, aviation partners, and tourism boards to maintain the growth momentum. With substantial air connectivity, increasing demand, and focused promotional strategies, Malaysia is determined to solidify its status as the go-to international destination for Indian travelers in the years to come.
