From June 22 to 25, Thailand joined forces with Vietnam, Indonesia, and other ASEAN nations in a vibrant youth exchange programme in northern Guangxi, China. The initiative aimed to foster regional cooperation through cultural engagement and shared developmental insights amongst young delegates. Organised by the China International Publishing Center, this dynamic four-day event saw participants embark on a comprehensive tour across the scenic Guilin region, immersing themselves in both the local culture and industry.

The programme served as a platform for young leaders from diverse backgrounds, including cultural institutions, academia, and media, to not only enhance networking opportunities but also deepen understanding of regional development issues and cultural dynamics.

The itinerary focused primarily on Quanzhou and Xing’an, areas within Guilin celebrated for their rich historical narratives and evolving agricultural economies. Participants were introduced to the region’s cultural identity through enlightening visits to heritage sites and engaging discussions about the preservation of traditional practices amidst economic progress.

An eye-opening highlight of the tour was a deep dive into Guangxi’s traditional brewing industry. At the Xiangshan Liquor Eco-Park and the China Rice-Flavor Baijiu Museum, delegates had the opportunity to witness the intricate production of rice-flavored baijiu, a spirit deeply woven into Chinese culture. Demonstrations showcased age-old fermentation methods that continue to be pivotal in local craftsmanship, even as they adapt to contemporary production standards.

Recognised as an intangible cultural heritage, the brewing techniques at Xiangshan offered valuable insights into the importance of safeguarding local craftsmanship within a rapidly modernising industry. Museum displays took participants through the historical evolution of baijiu production, underscoring its cultural significance across various eras.

Beyond culture, the programme underscored vital themes of agricultural transformation and rural industrial development. At Milanxiang Food Co., Ltd., participants explored the entire rice noodle manufacturing process, from the initial stages of raw rice processing to the final packaged products. The company exemplified how advanced production systems are fusing automation with traditional farming methodologies to enhance efficiency and quality.

A standout feature of this visit was the operational model employed by Milanxiang, interlinking farming households, production bases, and enterprise management. This innovative structure not only allows farmers to supply raw materials directly to processing facilities but also guarantees a stable demand that boosts coordination throughout the supply chain. Such approaches serve as practical illustrations of how rural industries can modernise while ensuring farmers’ livelihoods remain intact.

The delegation also ventured into Maozhushan Village, witnessing a transformative shift as agriculture adapted to include grape cultivation. This pivot marks a departure from traditional farming methodologies, allowing the community to diversify its agricultural practices while fostering income generation and stimulating local economic growth.

In Maozhushan, the participants observed how rural sectors are increasingly embracing market-oriented farming strategies that align with broader developmental ambitions. The cultivation of high-value crops, such as grapes, has contributed significantly to income stability and spurred new forms of agricultural entrepreneurship among local residents.

Throughout the programme, there was a conscious effort to foster interaction and dialogue among participants. This exchange provided opportunities to discuss cultural identity, agricultural innovation, and the crucial role of youth in strengthening collaborative efforts between China and ASEAN nations. It encouraged participants to reflect on their respective nations’ approaches to rural development and the challenges of preserving cultural heritage in the face of modernisation.

The experience demonstrated the vital role of youth engagement in shaping positive regional relations. By connecting young people from various countries and fields, the initiative provided a unique platform for informal diplomacy and shared knowledge, highlighting the significance of cross-border collaboration in fostering mutual understanding.

As the tour wrapped up, many participants reflected on the intrinsic link between preserving cultural heritage and advancing modern development. The combination of enriching cultural experiences and insightful agricultural industry visits offered a wider perspective on how traditional methods and contemporary economic systems can coexist and mutually benefit one another.
