Bengaluru’s public transportation landscape is gearing up for a transformative shift as the city’s metro network embarks on a significant expansion of the Green Line. In 2026, the introduction of new rolling stock—specifically, six-coach trains—aims to bolster passenger capacity and tackle the persistent problem of overcrowding on one of the metropolis’s most frequented routes. The Metropolitan Transport Authority’s ambitious plan includes deploying three new six-coach trainsets, expected to dramatically improve the Green Line’s ability to manage peak-hour passenger traffic. This corridor acts as a vital link between several residential areas and key employment hubs in Bengaluru, resulting in consistently high demand from commuters.

By introducing longer trains to the service, not only will this upgrade facilitate better crowd management across platforms, but it will also enhance boarding efficiency, thereby alleviating delays that plummet during peak periods. Anticipated improvements in service stability during busy morning and evening rush hours will create a seamless commuting experience for passengers.
The three new trainsets will be sourced as part of a wider procurement effort initiated in 2019, which involves a partnership between the China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation and India’s own Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. The project aims to deliver a total of 216 metro coaches to support the city’s incessantly evolving and growing network of metro lines.
Despite encountering manufacturing delays linked to domestic localization norms, which required establishing local production capabilities, progress has since been made. A prototype trainset has already been allocated to the Green Line, and ongoing manufacturing is taking place at a facility in Uttarpara, West Bengal.
Currently, three Distance-To-Go (DTG)-enabled trainsets, including the prototype, are undergoing thorough testing as they approach operational readiness. Due to the intense demand for line usage, testing has been largely restricted to overnight hours, extending the overall timeline necessary for trials. Notwithstanding these constraints, significant technical milestones have been reached, including successful oscillation performance trials and completed signaling integration checks, receiving necessary approvals from railway authorities.
In advance of the trainsets entering passenger operation, final clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety is required. This crucial stage includes a meticulous inspection process encompassing 37 statutory checks to evaluate various technical and safety aspects such as braking systems, structural integrity, signaling operations, and emergency protocols. Once all assessments are completed to satisfaction, the trainsets will be poised for commercial launch, with an optimistic target set for August 2026.
The introduction of these new trainsets on the Green Line will further catalyze enhancements across Bengaluru’s entire metro system. Existing rolling stock currently employed on the Green Line will be reallocated to the Purple Line, noted for having the highest passenger volumes during peak travel periods. This strategic redistribution will serve to amplify train frequency, minimize waiting times, and mitigate congestion on the busiest routes.
Through this model, fleet utilization across both corridors will be optimized, promoting a balanced operational framework and an uptick in overall service efficiency.
Each of the new trainsets boasts advanced Distance-To-Go (DTG) signaling technology crafted to bolster train spacing accuracy and overall operational control. This upgrade will allow for an efficient flow of trains while upholding stringent safety standards, with closer but meticulously regulated train operations supporting higher frequencies of service without compromising on reliability.

Since its inception in 2019, the metro coach procurement program has faced several setbacks, primarily owing to the stringent localization mandates that necessitated the implementation of domestic manufacturing capabilities. Early challenges hampered the pace of execution, prompting a reevaluation of production models.
However, fruitful collaborations between the international supplier and local manufacturers, as well as modifications in the supply chain, have paved the way for progress, reinstating momentum to the expansion project. This restructuring enables the delivery of the trainsets in phases, allowing for a more dynamic approach to meeting the city’s transportation needs.
As testing nears conclusion and regulatory endorsements are on the horizon, Bengaluru’s Green Line is primed for a substantial operational enhancement by August 2026. The rollout of three six-coach trainsets promises to alleviate congestion, boost reliability, and elevate the commuting experience for Bengaluru’s metro riders.
