India’s UPI platform has been steadily penetrating global markets, making international payments simpler and faster. Alongside partnerships and technological collaborations established with banking institutions, travelers can now transact using their existing apps such as PhonePe, Google Pay, or BHIM while visiting these countries. Notably, the strategic launch was marked by Union Minister Piyush Goyal, underscoring the importance this expansion holds for India’s digital future.
For eligible travellers, scanning a merchant’s QR code abroad is all it takes to conduct transactions directly through their Indian bank accounts. This method not only eliminates the need for foreign currency but also simplifies daily purchases, making it easier to secure everything from transport tickets to meals. It enhances the overall tourist experience by reducing the need for cash, ensuring that payments are efficient and stress-free.
Among the earliest champions of UPI International, Bhutan has seamlessly woven UPI functionalities into its payment landscape. Adopting BHIM UPI standards, the country has established a robust network enabling Indian tourists to transact effortlessly across numerous merchant outlets. This integration has bolstered cross-border tourism, allowing Indian travellers to enjoy a hassle-free digital payment experience while shopping, dining, and accessing various services.
In an innovative move, Singapore has fully connected its local payment method, PayNow, with UPI, allowing for an interoperable framework between the two countries. This collaboration not only enhances the ease of payment for Indian visitors but also signifies a broader financial partnership that integrates advanced payment systems across borders.
The UAE stands out as another critical market supporting UPI’s international rollout, with over 200,000 terminals accepting UPI payments. Given the significant number of Indian tourists visiting the UAE each year, this widespread adoption has simplified the payment process for many, helping reduce cash dependency and increasing transaction convenience in various retail environments.
In neighboring Nepal, UPI has also gained traction, facilitating easy transactions within urban centers and major retail establishments. The strong economic relationship between India and Nepal has enabled travelers to benefit from this interoperability, making it a valuable addition for those traversing the region.
France has stepped up by incorporating UPI at several iconic tourist attractions, including online ticket sales for the Eiffel Tower. Meanwhile, Greece has recently joined the UPI network, launched in collaboration with Eurobank. With these initiatives, both countries are welcoming Indian tourists with payment solutions they are familiar with, such as QR code transactions.
In Mauritius, UPI has been introduced alongside the RuPay service to support scan-and-pay transactions at local merchants. Similarly, Sri Lanka’s integration through the LankaQR network empowers Indian visitors to navigate their spending with ease. Both destinations have significantly improved the financial landscape for travellers seeking straightforward and efficient payment methods.
Qatar has embraced UPI at select locations, particularly through partnerships with Qatar National Bank, enhancing the shopping experience for visitors. Cambodia has also activated UPI payments via ACLEDA Bank, making cross-border transactions more accessible for tourists. These additions exemplify the growing interest in digital payment interoperability on a global scale.
Exciting developments are on the horizon as more countries prepare for UPI integration. Ongoing discussions and collaborations with various nations, such as Indonesia and Japan, highlight the commitment to enhancing digital payment solutions globally. The Thai tourist market is also considering partnerships for future implementation, further indicating UPI’s potential reach.
Before setting off on your adventures abroad, travelers should activate the UPI International feature within their payment apps. This process includes choosing the desired bank account and entering the registered UPI PIN for security. Note that the international feature will expire after 90 days for security reasons, but can be easily reactivated when needed.
The expansion of UPI into 10 international markets marks a significant achievement within India’s digital economy. With these enhanced payment options, Indian travellers can enjoy a more connected and streamlined travel experience. As UPI’s influence continues to grow globally, cross-border payments are set to become an increasingly vital part of international travel for countless Indian tourists.
