According to figures released by the National Immigration Administration (NIA), the 369 million cross-border trips between January and June 2026 represent a year-on-year growth of 10.8 percent. This surge denotes not only an easing of travel restrictions but also underscores the efficacy of China’s tourism-friendly border policies.
The foreign travel sector is a major driving force behind this uptick. During the same timeframe, China recorded 45.91 million trips by foreign nationals, reflecting a significant 20.6 percent increase from the previous year. The growing interest from travelers worldwide showcases China’s appeal as a leading destination for tourism.
Among these figures, the rise in visa-free travel is particularly noteworthy. Over 17.81 million international travelers gained entry to China without a visa, which constituted a remarkable 77.7 percent of all foreign arrivals. This category saw a staggering increase of 30.6 percent compared to the same period in 2025, signifying the success of China’s efforts to widen its visa-free entry program.
Currently, China has implemented unilateral visa-free access for citizens from 50 countries, and travelers from 55 nations can leverage its 240-hour visa-free transit policy. These advancements not only enrich China’s competitive tourism landscape but also propel the vibrant “China Travel” trend, making waves on social media globally.
The demand for inbound tourism is predominantly supported by key international and regional markets, accounting for an impressive 62 percent of all foreign arrivals during the reporting period.
These countries have become essential conduits for China’s tourism recovery, driving increases in leisure travel, business exchanges, and family visits.
In tandem with these developments, China’s outbound travel market has also seen impressive growth attributed to the relaxation of entry requirements in various nations for Chinese passport holders.
Several countries, including Türkiye, Brazil, Sudan, and Cambodia, have introduced new visa-free entry agreements this year, contributing to a surge in the international mobility of Chinese travelers and enhance the utility of the Chinese passport.
Between January and June 2026, residents of mainland China completed over 88.02 million outbound journeys, showcasing a 10.5 percent increase from the previous year, driven by heightened demand for overseas adventures, business relocations, studies, and family connections.
While facilitating travel convenience takes precedence, maintaining stringent border security remains a key priority for Chinese authorities. In the first half of 2026, immigration officials tackled 11,400 criminal cases related to border management, apprehending over 22,400 suspects and dismantling 157 significant criminal organizations that operated across borders.
Future plans include the initiation of a national enforcement campaign aimed at addressing long-standing fugitive networks involved in human smuggling, strengthening international partnerships to apprehend individuals involved in transnational crimes.
During this period, authorities also stepped up inspections focused on foreigners who illegally entered, resided, or worked within China, resulting in the identification and deportation of approximately 11,900 individuals.
Chinese border security agencies did not relent in their fight against firearms trafficking, narcotics smuggling, and other organized crime during this time. A total of 209 drug-related cases were resolved, leading to the arrest of 305 suspects and the seizure of about 4.37 metric tons of illegal drugs during this time frame.
