New regulations have been put in place at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, allowing eligible passengers to complete check-in procedures much closer to their scheduled departure times. These updates primarily cater to travellers without checked baggage, thus minimizing their unnecessary waiting periods within airport terminals.
As of July 8, China Southern Airlines has launched a unique “15-minute check-in” service for all domestic flights operating out of Shenzhen. This permits passengers who do not check in any luggage to finalize check-in, security checks, and boarding processes as late as 15 minutes before their departure—a marked improvement over the traditional norms where check-in counters typically closed 30 to 40 minutes in advance.
For those travelling with checked luggage, the updated system has reduced the baggage drop time to just 30 minutes before takeoff. This adjustment provides greater leeway for travellers while ensuring that all operational requirements are feasibly met for baggage handling and aircraft readiness.
Nonetheless, the airport emphasizes the importance of arriving earlier for those needing special assistance, including wheelchair users, first-time flyers, unaccompanied minors, and pregnant travellers. These groups are encouraged to arrive ahead of the cut-off times to ensure a smooth boarding experience.
Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport is not stopping at China Southern Airlines. An array of other airlines—Air China, Shenzhen Airlines, Shandong Airlines, and Kunming Airlines—are joining the movement to streamline domestic flight processing times, thereby further enhancing travel efficiency.
Currently, trials are underway for the Shenzhen–Beijing Capital and Shenzhen–Shanghai Hongqiao routes, where travellers without checked luggage may check in as late as 20 minutes before departure, while those with luggage must adhere to a 30-minute cutoff.
The airport expects these trials may soon expand to additional destinations as airlines assess passenger needs, operational effectiveness, and airport service efficiencies.
Along with these expedited check-in times, Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport and Shenzhen Airlines have now introduced a flexible travel option: the “Fly Anytime” service. This innovative service allows certain passengers on the Shenzhen–Beijing Capital route to switch to another same-day flight in the same cabin class without incurring additional fees, depending on seat availability.
This new service is available for passengers holding tickets on Shenzhen Airlines or Air China purchased at 65% of the full fare or more, providing added flexibility especially for business travellers and those whose plans may change.

For travellers using airlines that have not yet adopted these updated check-in procedures, the standard check-in requirement remains at 38 minutes before departure.
