In contrast, the new railway will allow passengers to travel between Yining and Aksu in approximately eight hours, enhancing accessibility and promoting regional movement.

Stretching for about 798 kilometres, the Yining–Aksu Railway includes nearly 460 kilometres of newly developed track, designed as a single-track electrified railway that caters to both passenger and freight operations.

The railway’s design speed of 160 kilometres per hour promises efficient and reliable transport within the region. With 22 railway stations planned—including 18 newly constructed stations—the project aims to enhance connectivity for communities along the route and spur local economic growth.

  • 122 million metric tonnes of freight transported in the first half of the year, reflecting a 4.2% year-on-year increase.
  • Approximately 26 million passenger journeys expected over the same timeframe, an increase of 2.2%.
  • 49.64 million tonnes of outbound coal shipments, marking an 8.3% year-on-year rise.
  • 18.65 million tonnes of freight moved through Xinjiang’s border ports, an impressive 9.2% increase.
  • 9,459 China–Europe and China–Asia freight train services operated, reflecting a 6.7% growth.

These findings highlight Xinjiang’s vital role as a transportation and logistics hub, connecting China with neighboring international markets.

Strengthening International Rail Connections

The railway significantly reinforces China’s international rail transport ambitions, facilitating freight movement across various cross-border corridors linking multiple countries, including:
