The Strait of Hormuz holds immense strategic significance, as a passage linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, where a substantial volume of global energy exports transit. Previous reports have indicated a substantial drop in commercial activity at Jebel Ali following disruptions in access through the strait, with cargo operations plummeting between 90% to 95% during crises.

Importantly, an overland pipeline allows crude oil exports from Abu Dhabi to reach Fujairah, further enhancing its logistical significance.

Khor Fakkan, situated within Sharjah but geographically adjacent to Fujairah, has gained traction as an essential hub in the UAE’s east coast shipping network. However, as shipping volumes have surged from cargo diversions, both Fujairah and Khor Fakkan have experienced significant congestion.
To address these demands, Gulftainer is pursuing a substantial $2 billion investment aimed at enhancing Khor Fakkan Container Terminal’s cargo-handling capacity, thereby reinforcing its role as a key regional hub.
Together, Fujairah and Khor Fakkan can complement each other, serving different segments of the logistics market while establishing a more robust maritime network for the UAE.
To ensure success, east coast port developments will require reliable inland transport connections facilitating easy movement of cargo between Fujairah, Khor Fakkan, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. Road freight will play a pivotal role in transferring containers to warehouses and consumer markets across the UAE, while future rail connectivity could enhance the overall efficiency of the logistics framework.
