Kuwait Airways is set to significantly enhance its flight operations starting in June, thanks to the recent approvals from regulatory authorities. According to Acting CEO Abdulwahab Al-Shatti, the airline will operate approximately 728 weekly flights across 58 destinations worldwide. This marks a notable increase from its current service levels, which average around 420 weekly flights to 45 destinations.
The expansion is a strategic response to the rising global demand for air travel, which continues to challenge the airline industry alongside high operational costs. Kuwait Airways is focused on returning to a normalized operation and ensuring optimal service delivery for travelers during the bustling summer season while addressing the financial constraints posed by increasing fuel prices and complicated geographical operations.

The expanded network set to launch in June will cover a wide range of territories, reaching across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. In Europe, significant cities including Malaga, Nice, Vienna, Zurich, Moscow, London, and Barcelona will be part of the new routes. The airline is also integrating summer hot spots into its schedule, including destinations like Antalya, Bodrum, and Mykonos.
Furthermore, in the Asian region, essential connectivity will extend to major hubs such as Delhi, Kathmandu, Bangkok, and Mumbai. The Middle East service will also be bolstered with flights to cities including Cairo, Beirut, and Dubai.
In light of recent operational disruptions, Kuwait Airways is actively managing ticket cancellations that arose following February 28, with around 500,000 tickets affected. CEO Abdulwahab Al-Shatti stated that over half of these requests have been processed, showcasing the airline’s commitment to customer service. The backlog has understandably extended processing times due to unprecedented demands on the system.
The airline has also implemented a policy permitting passengers to keep their tickets valid for two years, providing them the flexibility to rebook without extra costs or fare differences. This initiative aims to alleviate any inconveniences travelers may experience as operations normalize.
Kuwait Airways, like many airlines globally, is facing substantial economic pressure due to soaring aviation fuel prices—which have risen over 120%—and increasing insurance premiums. These factors directly impact fare structures, making it challenging for the airline to maintain competitive pricing. Operating costs are influenced by various external factors including supply chain disruptions and shifting geopolitical dynamics.
Management has indicated that ticket prices are also affected by Special Prorate Agreements (SPA) with other airlines, complicating independent pricing decisions. Route changes and fuel consumption pressures continue to escalate operational costs, particularly for short-haul flights within the Gulf.
In response to an increase in customer inquiries during the operational crisis, Kuwait Airways has ramped up its customer support services, deploying additional staff to handle the surge in calls. This effort aims to reduce wait times and improve the quality of assistance for travelers seeking refunds or information on flight schedules.
The abrupt closure of Kuwait airspace on February 28 posed a critical challenge, stranding multiple travelers worldwide. In response, Kuwait Airways implemented emergency protocols to reroute flights and assist passengers, with initiatives that included temporary accommodations and arranging repatriation for stranded citizens. Over 2,180 nationals were returned home via dedicated flights to Dammam between March 2 and 13.
Moreover, during the airspace disruption, the airline maintained crucial humanitarian operations, transporting over 2.4 million kilograms of medical supplies and food essentials, underscoring its role in supporting the state’s needs.
