Athens is poised to lead the way in transforming air travel across Europe with the launch of the ATHENIAN Project. This ambitious initiative aims to completely upgrade the Athens Terminal Manoeuvring Area (TMA) by incorporating advanced Performance Based Navigation (PBN) procedures using satellite technology. Beginning in January 2023 and expected to conclude by late 2027, the ATHENIAN project seeks not only to enhance the efficiency of arrivals and departures at Athens International Airport but also to significantly lower the environmental impact of air travel in the region.
Co-funded by the European Union under the Connecting Europe Facility – Transport Sector, the five-year project aligns with SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) objectives and is being executed by a consortium of aviation industry specialists. This collaboration includes the Hellenic Aviation Service Provider, AEGEAN Airlines, SKY express, and EUROCONTROL, all coordinated by Athens International Airport S.A. The project also enjoys oversight from EU/CINEA and the EYSSAE Unit of the Hellenic Ministry of Economy & Finance, ensuring it adheres to EU regulatory standards and strategic aviation initiatives.

The ATHENIAN project’s core ambition is to establish a satellite-based navigation framework that will replace outdated procedures reliant on vectoring and extensive radio communication. By utilizing advanced technology, the project aims to significantly enhance operational efficiency and harmonize Athens’ airspace operations with the overarching European Air Traffic Management Master Plan.
