United Airlines Expands Reach to Cartagena, Colombia: A Traveler's Guide

Travel enthusiasts, rejoice! Starting December 17, 2026, United Airlines is set to launch four weekly nonstop flights to the picturesque city of Cartagena, Colombia from Houston (IAH) and Washington Dulles (IAD). This exciting announcement marks a pivotal expansion in United’s Latin American service portfolio at a time when tourism in Colombia is flourishing, evidenced by the impressive $14.6 billion in inbound tourism spending recorded by DANE.

Exploring United’s Strategic Route Expansion

United’s new service will land at Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG), making Cartagena the airline’s third major Colombian destination, joining Bogotá (BOG) and Medellín (MDE). The flights are conveniently scheduled year-round and aim to cater to both remote corporate workers and vacationers who wish to immerse themselves in the allure of Colombia’s Caribbean coastline.

Initially, travelers can book flights every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, utilizing a modern fleet of Boeing 737 jets for a comfortable journey. Here’s what travelers can expect:

  • The Houston Gateway (IAH): Departing Texas at 9:35 a.m., passengers will arrive in Cartagena at 2:50 p.m. The return flight takes off from Colombia at 2:20 p.m., landing back in Houston at 5:45 p.m.
  • The Capital Connection (IAD): Flights will leave Washington Dulles at 8:20 a.m., arriving at 1:10 p.m., before returning from Cartagena at 4:00 p.m. and touching down in the capital region at 8:40 p.m.

With this expansion, United Airlines is enhancing the travel experience by offering aircraft equipped with modern amenities, such as seatback entertainment screens, Bluetooth audio connectivity, and expanded overhead storage bins. Additionally, MileagePlus members will enjoy forthcoming complimentary access to Starlink Wi-Fi. By connecting through its substantial hubs in Houston and Dulles, United opens up Cartagena to over 70 additional destinations across the United States, making it easier than ever for travelers to explore Colombia.

Inside the Transformation: A $241 Million Airport Upgrade

What many travel media outlets are overlooking is the substantial infrastructure development coinciding with United’s new route. The Colombian government has recently partnered with the Private Sector to secure a COP 887 billion (approximately $241.9 million USD) financing package to overhaul the airport’s infrastructure, including implementing a state-of-the-art 5G system.

Aviation Milestone: This endeavor marks Colombia’s inaugural private airport initiative under the 5G infrastructure program aimed at upgrading the terminal and establishing a new international wing.

This significant investment, managed by OINAC S.A., will see the construction of a new international terminal outfitted with modern boarding bridges and expanded facilities designed to handle an impressive 7.7 million passengers annually. By establishing a solid presence now, United is positioning itself strategically ahead of its competitors before the new terminal is fully operational.

The timing couldn’t be better, as the surge in travel to Colombia is also reflected in the Ministry of Commerce’s report of over 6.4 million international visitors to the country each year. United is poised to tap into a market growing at unprecedented rates, particularly in comparison to other South American coastal cities.

Why Cartagena Is Becoming a Long-Stay Travel Destination

Once known primarily as a stop for cruise excursions or a quick weekend destination, Cartagena is evolving dramatically. While its historic center continues to draw attention, a new wave of longer-stay travelers is shaping the local economy and experience.

According to data from ANATO (the Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies), more than 65% of international visitors to Colombia fall within the 18 to 49 age bracket. This younger demographic is increasingly blending remote work with exploration, prompting a demand for authentic experiences beyond the traditional tourist highlights. As travelers linger longer, they discover a vibrant city that offers serene mornings in historic neighborhoods, bustling local markets, and cozy neighborhood cafés, often away from the throngs of daytime tourists.

Discovering Cartagena: A Mosaic of Unique Neighborhoods

Cartagena’s charm lies in its distinctive neighborhoods, each appealing to different types of global adventurers:

  • The Old Town: This UNESCO World Heritage site is famed for its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, lively plazas, and beautiful balconies adorned with flowers.
  • Getsemaní: A vibrant artistic district brimming with local food stalls, eye-catching street art, and an exciting nightlife that draws independent travelers.
  • Bocagrande: A modern upscale area often likened to Miami, featuring high-rise buildings, a stunning beachfront, and premium shopping options.

A Culinary Journey: Must-Try Restaurants in Cartagena

As Cartagena continues to grow, its culinary scene has blossomed into one of South America’s most revered. From fine dining to beloved neighborhood eateries, here are some top spots to indulge your taste buds:
