Supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), this initiative is set to enhance financial innovation and streamline tourism transactions for international travelers.
The Cross-Border QR Payment system has been rolled out to allow visitors from selected countries to perform secure, contactless transactions in real time, which offers a convenient alternative to cash payments across Thailand’s numerous attractions, restaurants, shops, and services.

Central to this initiative is the Pay Like a Local concept, designed to bridge the gap between traveler familiarity and merchant readiness for a more efficient digital payment ecosystem. This model not only aims to simplify transactions for visitors but also bolsters the digitization of local businesses.
The successful deployment of this payment revolution is backed by a coordinated effort among various institutions, spearheaded by the TAT under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Key players include the Bank of Thailand and a consortium of eight participating financial institutions, such as Krungthai Bank, Bangkok Bank, Kasikornbank, and several others. The initiative has also received a significant boost from national ITMX, along with global partners like Alipay and WeChat Pay.
As a result of this extensive collaboration, the interoperability between foreign payment systems and Thai merchant networks has effectively broadened, creating a unified framework for cashless transactions and meeting the rising demand for cashless travel across the nation.
The Pay Like a Local initiative is central to enhancing the convenience of tourist spending, empowering visitors to utilize familiar financial applications from their home countries for daily transactions in Thailand. Tourists can simply scan QR codes at participating establishments using supported mobile banking apps or e-wallets, simplifying the payment process and ensuring a seamless travel experience.
This cashless approach reduces the need for physical currency, significantly enhancing security and efficiency while facilitating direct digital payments across various sectors, including accommodation, dining, transport, and retail. Currently, tourists from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Korea, Laos, Cambodia, and Hong Kong can enjoy this system, with plans for further expansion into additional markets.
The shift in consumer behavior within East Asia has emerged as a pivotal factor in driving the expansion of digital payment adoption. An increasing reliance on mobile payment technology is evident, with travelers exhibiting a growing demand for QR-based systems during their travels. Tourism leaders in the region emphasize that the integration of Cross-Border QR Payment systems is essential for enhancing visitor satisfaction while fostering local businesses.
This initiative aims to fortify Thailand’s standings as a modern, digitally connected tourist destination, aligning with the evolving trends in international travel behavior.
To catalyze widespread acceptance, a Merchant Activation Roadshow and educational programs have been conducted at Asiatique The Riverfront Destination in Bangkok. This interactive initiative engaged local tourism operators, retailers, and service providers while offering them in-depth insights into QR payment systems and facilitating their onboarding into the digital payment landscape.
Merchants were granted the opportunity to learn about operational readiness and receive personalized consultations from partner financial institutions, with on-site QR merchant registrations available to expedite the adoption process. These events also featured partner exhibitions, promotional activities, and incentives such as enticing draws for registered merchants, reinforcing the drive for increased participation in the program.
Before the major activation event in Bangkok, a successful pilot program was conducted on 31 March 2026, in Udon Thani to prepare local operators for an anticipated influx of tourists, particularly from China. This initiative served as a testing ground for the QR payment system in regional settings and specifically aimed to assess readiness among local businesses.
The pilot included a dedicated seminar attended by 52 tourism operators, alongside a mobile outreach unit deployed to assist smaller businesses, ensuring that the system’s performance and infrastructure were ready for wider rollout.
The advancement of the Cross-Border QR Payment network aligns with Thailand’s broader strategy to enhance its position as a leading global tourism destination. Streamlined transactions improve the quality of visitor experiences while optimizing operational efficiency for merchants.
The integration of international payment networks with domestic financial systems paves the way for more robust economic participation within the tourism sector, benefitting small and medium-sized enterprises through increased transaction volumes and minimized cash handling challenges. By fostering continual cooperation among financial institutions, tourism authorities, and tech partners, Thailand is poised for substantial growth in international arrivals and a transformation in the travel experience.
