Air Serbia Launches Premium Cabin Experience on Inaugural Long-Haul Flight to Canada

On May 23, Air Serbia proudly debuted its inaugural long-haul premium service to Canada, a significant step in expanding its international network. Following the purchase of tickets back on February 20, passengers eagerly anticipated this flight, which manifests a considerably higher investment in business class compared to previous introductory routes to China such as Shanghai and Guangzhou. The flight concluded with a one-way journey as passengers explored the Canadian region, marking this route as a new venture for the airline.

Arriving at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport around 09:30 AM, travelers found the airport bustling with activity, as multiple intercontinental flights were scheduled close together. These included Air Serbia flights to New York, Shanghai, and Toronto, along with a Hainan Airlines flight to Beijing. Premium travelers enjoyed dedicated check-in counters tailored for the Canadian operations, allowing for streamlined processing through passport control and security, which were remarkably efficient.

Opting for a stroll through the departures terminal instead of lounging, the excitement ramped up as boarding gates C11 and C12 were prepared for the journey. An official inaugural ceremony took place at gate C13, showcasing all five of Air Serbia’s wide-body aircraft lined up together—a splendid sight featuring Airbus A330-200s freshly emblazoned with the airline’s special liveries.

Aircraft Substitutions and Cabin Architecture

Originally scheduled to operate the flight, aircraft registration YU-ARB offered a unique seat map and cabin layout. However, a strategic change resulted in the use of an EXPO-themed aircraft model, either YU-ARE or YU-ARD, just a day before the flight. Consequently, passengers were automatically assigned seats that required adjustments, leading to a thoughtful switch to a window seat. The business class cabin, structured in a favorable 1-2-1 configuration, maximizes privacy and comfort, especially for those seated in odd-numbered seats.

This specific aircraft boasts a rich heritage, having previously flown with Etihad Airways. Its interior has been revamped to match the aesthetic of YU-ARB, using premium seating that aligns with the latest Boeing 777 offerings. The cabin creates an open ambiance by omitting central overhead storage, allowing for abundant space while each personal seating area was stocked with thoughtful amenities including a large pillow, plush blanket, slippers, and bottled water, alongside a printed dining menu. Moreover, the spacious seats convert into fully lie-flat beds, complemented by USB charging ports for added convenience.

Pre-Flight Operations and Dedicated Customer Care

Boarding commenced at approximately 11:40 AM for the scheduled 12:30 PM departure, using a private jet bridge to facilitate access for premium passengers. The traveler demographics featured a mix of Serbian nationals, Canadians, and a few Russian speakers, with many expressing heartfelt appreciation for the non-stop service to Ontario, enabling visits to relatives abroad. Flight attendants welcomed guests with sparkling wine, water, and juices, elevating the pre-flight experience.

The cabin crew ensured a personalized introduction, greeting each passenger with a warm touch. Ahead of takeoff, eco-friendly headphones were offered in sustainable pouches made from recycled materials, underscoring Air Serbia’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Passengers could choose their meals beforehand, thanks to a dine-on-demand structure that allows flexibility during the flight, elevating the overall dining experience.

In-Flight Gastronomy and Amenities

Following a timely pushback and a brief address from the captain regarding flight duration, the aircraft luxuriously departed at 12:45 PM. Upon reaching cruising altitude, additional announcements highlighted the flight path and emphasized this historic service as a wonderful revival since the golden era of JAT. Comfort items such as premium amenity kits and pajamas were provided upon request, enhancing the onboard leisure.

The dining experience commenced with appetizers and a selection of fine wines, served directly at the seat to allow for sampling. Each meal course was served individually—enhancing the dining experience—and featured delights from a fresh bread basket. The elegantly designed tray tables added a layer of practicality, enabling ease of movement without disrupting dining arrangements.

Rest, Entertainment, and Final Reflections

Approximately four hours into the flight, the lavatories were found impeccably clean, reflecting the airline’s high standards. An interesting detail noted was that the forward galley lacked permanent kitchen facilities, consolidating meal preparations in the rear galley, further ensuring a seamless service flow. Premium cabin attributes were accentuated by tasteful wood finishes throughout the interior.

The in-flight entertainment system provided a robust selection of films, games, and series—ideal for long-distance travel. As night fell in the cabin, travelers comfortably reclined into horizontal beds, enjoying restful sleep supported by thick cushions, though the provided bedding was notably warm.
Two hours before landing, commemorative flight certificates and sweet treats celebrating the route complemented the overall experience. A final meal service punctuated the journey, featuring a delightful menu just before descent. As the aircraft touched down in Toronto, passengers responded with applause, marking a successful inaugural flight.

Arrivals were expedited through digital kiosks and efficient passport control, leading to a smooth luggage recovery and transfer to downtown’s Union Station. Overall, Air Serbia has gained high commendations for seat comfort, attentive service, and meal quality. As the airline continues to upgrade its offerings, including the potential reintroduction of in-flight Wi-Fi, it remains set to impress future travelers with premium long-haul experiences.
