In an exciting development for the burgeoning health tourism sector, a robust coalition featuring key public and private stakeholders has rallied behind the HWONFEX 2026 initiative. Spearheaded by the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), and the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care (PITAHC), this collaboration marks a pivotal moment for the region’s health tourism landscape. The signing of a unified declaration took place at the Hilton Hotel in Newport World Resorts, situated in Parañaque, southern Manila, designating HWONFEX 2026 as a major ASEAN side event.
The objective of this alliance is to position Southeast Asia as a global hub for health tourism, targeting advanced medical travel and fostering health intelligence networks. It aims to innovate wellness solutions that span borders, creating immediate economic opportunities throughout the region. This initiative seeks to transform fragmented wellness markets into streamlined, high-utility frameworks that merge health intelligence with economic strategies.

Supported by the DSWD, the framework aims to boost the ASEAN-recognized event’s profile. Organizer Macky Soriano noted that wellness must evolve beyond a luxury to become a vital component of macroeconomic development. This sector currently drives more than 10 percent of the Philippines’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“HWONFEX serves as a macro-economic marketplace for health intelligence and capital,” Soriano underscored, with emphasis on the urgency to build on this opportunity until the country’s next ASEAN Chairmanship hosting in 11 years. The initiative intends to optimize the region’s health tourism potential, creating sustainable cross-border economic growth that directly aligns with broader integration initiatives in Southeast Asia.
Former Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo-Teo acknowledged the strategic significance of attracting high-value visitors, stating that this influx could bolster the national economy and ensure local labor networks are effectively utilized for maximum gains in health tourism.
Additionally, experts from the private sector, such as Dr. Paulo Tugbang from the DOT, highlighted the importance of B2B trade expo components, reinforcing that international partnerships through these platforms would channel premium revenues into local healthcare services.
Recent data from the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) indicates a pivotal moment in wellness markets: the global wellness economy has reached a staggering valuation of $6.8 trillion, with expectations to approach $9 trillion. Notably, the wellness market in the Philippines has surged to $47.3 billion—an impressive growth of 31 percent since 2019—making it a major player in the Asia Pacific region.
This remarkable growth underscores a shift in regional travel strategies, with domestic tourism comprising about 70 percent of wellness travel in the Philippines. Nonetheless, the new alliance aims to attract higher-spending international tourists, who typically invest 62 percent more than their international counterparts.
The economic benefits of targeting this lucrative demographic are substantial, with cross-border revenues expected to enhance local healthcare ecosystems via campaigns like Go and Get Better.

The proposed strategy identifies three main operational pathways: Go Explore, Grow Communities, and Glow Together, which align with national development goals and ASEAN plans. Go Explore focuses on enhancing medical travel infrastructure and attracting high-value visitors, whereas Grow Communities concentrates on capital investment and local trade development. Concurrently, Glow Together emphasizes health production and public wellness by integrating traditional practices with modern health systems.
These pathways not only aim to promote regional prosperity but also position the Philippines as a foremost destination for medical tourism while advancing public health initiatives.
Central to HWONFEX’s strategy is fostering connections between global market players—an essential composition of sellers and buyers that will enhance collaboration. Advanced medical and longevity travel will see involvement from clinical networks and diagnostic centers, focusing on sustainable solutions across diverse wellness sectors.
Upcoming moves include a vital three-day program set for September 4 to 6, 2026, with the SMX Convention Center slated for a specialized international trade expo focused on business matchmaking and connectivity. Meanwhile, luxury accommodations will be facilitated at Newport World Resorts, providing an exclusive environment for high-profile B2B initiatives.
The participation of various institutional stakeholders—ranging from health departments to business coalitions—illustrates a unified commitment to advancing health tourism in the region. With applications now open for prospective international buyers and local vendors, this initiative promises to be a benchmark for regional economic growth and development in health tourism.
Catherine Turvill from PCCI highlighted the critical importance of adopting market standardization to seamlessly integrate local businesses with international operations, ultimately enhancing domestic economic resilience.
