In a significant milestone for the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) system, officials project an ambitious record of 83.87 million passengers for the year 2026. This announcement is timed with the celebration of THSR’s 20th anniversary, marking two decades of dedicated service to Taiwan’s transportation landscape. With a renewed focus on expanding services and modernizing its fleet, THSR aims to elevate the overall passenger experience as it prepares for another notable operational year.
Chairperson Shih Che (史哲), who was re-elected during a recent investors’ meeting, indicated that THSR is set to implement cutting-edge technological enhancements alongside service upgrades in response to the growing demand for travel. In 2025, THSR recorded 82.07 million passengers, demonstrating a 4.88% year-on-year increase. This growth corresponds to an annual revenue of NT$54.65 billion (approximately US$1.7 billion) and a net profit of NT$6.58 billion, reflecting the company’s ongoing operational success and financial health.

During the investor’s session, a new board of directors was elected, reaffirming Chair Shih Che’s leadership. Under his guidance, THSR is embarking on long-term initiatives designed to enhance network capacity and service quality, embracing new technology to better accommodate travelers. Shih emphasized that these strategic plans align with their objectives leading into their 20th operational year in January 2027, showcasing their commitment to continuous growth and significant infrastructure expansion.
Central to THSR’s modernization efforts is the introduction of 12 N700ST trains acquired from the Hitachi–Toshiba Supreme Consortium. These high-speed trains are set to begin arriving in August 2026, with plans to enter service in the latter half of 2027 following rigorous testing and commissioning. This new fleet will work in conjunction with existing trains, boosting service frequency and improving reliability while accommodating the anticipated increase in passenger numbers.
THSR is committed to continuous improvement in both hardware and software across its system. Collaborations with telecommunications partners will augment in-train connectivity, while the installation of platform screen doors at all stations is aimed at bolstering passenger safety. These advancements underscore the company’s dedication to modern operational standards and the integration of smart technologies.
In March 2026, expansion work commenced at the main depot located in Kaohsiung’s Yanchao District. The project will add an additional 11,500 square meters to the facility, enhancing capabilities for inspections and assembly of new trains and ensuring the operational reliability of its fleet.
To address rising passenger traffic, THSR added 25 new train services in July 2025, increasing weekly operations to 1,128 trips. Last year, the average occupancy rate was 71.59%, demonstrating high demand and consistent ridership growth throughout the network. Shih affirmed that this service expansion aligns with goals for passenger convenience and operational efficiency.
Looking ahead, THSR is set to embark on major expansion initiatives aimed at enhancing connectivity throughout Taiwan. A planned 26.2-kilometer southward extension from Zuoying Station to Pingtung is expected to be completed by 2039, while a 60.6-kilometer eastward expansion from Nangang Station to Yilan will conclude in 2036. These projects will improve regional mobility and bolster economic growth.
Despite these optimistic advancements, THSR faced operational disruptions in early May 2026 due to a signal malfunction that impacted around 240,000 passengers. The issue was resolved promptly, and THSR provided compensation options, including discounted fares for those affected. Shih reiterated the company’s dedication to ensuring reliability and passenger trust.
THSR’s modernization initiative encompasses digital developments aimed at enhancing the overall travel experience. Improved connectivity provides passengers with access to real-time updates, onboard Wi-Fi, and user-friendly mobile applications for ticketing and journey planning. Safety measures, including modern platform screen doors and sophisticated signaling systems, are being integrated to ensure both operational efficiency and passenger security.
Financially, THSR showcases consistent growth, with revenues rising 2.75% last year alongside steady net profits. With a focus on balancing profitability against investments in fleet enhancements and environmental sustainability, THSR is evolving as an essential part of Taiwan’s transport strategy.
