Hurtigruten's MS Midnatsol: A Refurbished Gem for Svalbard and Norway Voyages

For adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers dreaming of summer escapades beneath the Midnight Sun in Svalbard or embracing the crisp winter aura along the Norwegian coast, Hurtigruten proudly presents a newly refurbished MS Midnatsol. After a comprehensive makeover completed in spring 2026, this stylish vessel officially joined the esteemed Signature fleet on March 4th, setting sail towards The Svalbard Line between Bergen and Longyearbyen, and later transitioning to the North Cape Line during the winter months.

Expanded Signature Capacity for Svalbard and Norway

In response to an influx of interest from travelers, especially from markets like Australia and the broader APAC region, Hurtigruten is ramping up capacity for its Signature voyages. MS Midnatsol becomes the third addition to the fleet, pairing with sister ships MS Trollfjord and MS Finnmarken. The focus will be on extended port stays, a leisurely pace, and more profound cultural interactions as the ship glides along the enchanting Norwegian coast and the majestic landscapes of Svalbard.

During the summer months (from May to September), MS Midnatsol navigates The Svalbard Line, retracing historic routes under near-constant daylight. In winter, this vessel adapts to the North Cape Line, embarking weekly voyages from Hamburg, specifically timed for those eager to witness the northern lights amidst awe-inspiring snow-covered backdrops.

Hurtigruten has noted an escalating trend among Australian tourists, who seek immersive experiences focusing on nature, local culture, and cuisine, fulfilling the interests that the Signature concept aims to satisfy.

What’s New on Board MS Midnatsol?

The transformation of MS Midnatsol has redefined guest experiences aboard the vessel. The upgrade from a “coastal contemporary” design to a sophisticated Signature style has enhanced cabins, interiors, and prime public areas, ushering in a serene and elegant ambiance at sea. A significant number of cabins have undergone refurbishment, with a strong focus on increasing the availability of double, outside cabins, and suites that match the standards set by the other Signature ships.

Public spaces are now designed to showcase stunning panoramas and inviting lounges, enticing guests to relax while enjoying views of fjords and quaint fishing villages. Amenities include complimentary Wi-Fi, a panoramic lounge, an upgraded fitness center and sauna, an Expedition Team hub, and adaptable meeting areas, all within a cozy vessel environment accommodating about 500 to 650 guests, depending on the type of voyage.

Moreover, critical updates ensure compliance with the Polar Code, enhancing safety measures and environmental standards during polar expeditions to Svalbard and the High North.

Signature Dining: Flora, Árran, and Røst

The culinary experience aboard MS Midnatsol has been a highlight of the refurbishment, featuring three distinctive dining venues that celebrate local Norwegian and Sámi culinary influences while adhering to Hurtigruten’s Signature dining philosophy.

  • Flora: The main dining area inspired by Norwegian herbs, berries, mushrooms, and coastal harvests offers hearty breakfast and lunch buffets, alongside both buffet and à la carte dinner options that utilize seasonal ingredients from the regions the ship traverses.
  • Brasserie Árran: Named after the fire central to a Sámi lavvo, this brasserie serves as a social hub, providing quick and mouth-watering offerings like salads, sandwiches, burgers, and traditional Norwegian dishes.
  • Røst: Located on deck 8 with breathtaking coastal views, Røst provides an elegant à la carte dining experience, showcasing exquisite dishes crafted by some of Hurtigruten’s top chefs, featuring premium ingredients sourced from Norway’s fisheries, farms, and foragers.

Additionally, the revamped two-level observation deck features the 1893 Bar, a cozy spot where guests can relax with drinks inspired by coastal flavors while enjoying uninterrupted views through ceiling-height windows.

Itineraries: The Svalbard Line and North Cape Line

MS Midnatsol’s Signature operations revolve around two unique itineraries, accommodating travelers seeking both Arctic thrill and cultural richness.

  • The Svalbard Line (summer)
Sailing from Bergen to Longyearbyen from May to September, this line traces the routes of early polar pioneers, offering extended stays in port and scenic explorations under the Midnight Sun. New destinations include Åndalsnes, Træna, Reine, and Ny-Ålesund, each chosen for captivating landscapes and opportunities for nature-oriented excursions.
  • The North Cape Line – Winter (from Hamburg)
In the winter season, MS Midnatsol will host weekly excursions on the North Cape Line from Hamburg, visiting iconic ports like Stavanger and Narvik, alongside familiar harbor towns from Hurtigruten’s Coastal Express service. These journeys embrace snowy vistas and intimate interactions with coastal communities throughout the quieter months.

Both itineraries feature an enhanced Expedition Team, who provide insightful discussions, guided activities, and immersive on-shore encounters to enrich guests’ understanding of Norway’s diverse culture and natural beauty.

A Personal Experience Along Norway’s Coast

For those eager to embark on a Norwegian coastal journey or an adventure along the Svalbard Line, the integration of MS Midnatsol into the Hurtigruten Signature fleet promises a unique exploration experience. Emphasizing comfort, local narratives, cuisine, and culture, this ship is thoughtfully designed to foster a deep connection with the breathtaking landscapes of Norway and the wilderness of Svalbard. Whether it’s Australian couples chasing the enchanting Midnight Sun or families from Hamburg in pursuit of the magical Northern Lights, MS Midnatsol beckons travelers with its warm, small-ship charm, affording more time to explore ashore and offering an enriched sense of place. This rejuvenated vessel is a gateway to unforgettable experiences, making dreams of standing on deck to gaze at the horizon or witnessing the aurora in shimmering colors feel tantalizingly close.
