Discover Lakshadweep: How to Secure Your Permit Online with New Tourism Rules

The picturesque Lakshadweep islands are set to become more accessible for travelers with the recent overhaul of entry permit regulations. Announced on April 29, 2026, these new rules aim to eliminate the bureaucratic barriers previously faced by both domestic and international tourists, thus promoting Lakshadweep tourism.

A New Era of Accessibility

For years, obtaining a permit to visit these stunning islands was often cumbersome due to strict regulations. Travelers needed to find a local sponsor or an authorized entity, which posed challenges for independent explorers, especially those unfamiliar with the region. Thankfully, this requirement has been abolished, paving the way for tourists to plan their journeys autonomously and effortlessly.

Additionally, the previous mandate regarding the Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) from travelers’ home states has also been lifted. Gone are the days of waiting for approval from varying jurisdictions; the newly established system allows the Lakshadweep Police to conduct internal checks once the application is submitted via the official e-permit portal. This change drastically reduces the administrative burden on visitors while maintaining the island’s security integrity.

Applications and Preserved Measures

While the new permit system is significantly easier, travelers still need to adhere to structured requirements to ensure smooth tourism management. To gain access to the islands, it is essential for applicants to submit their entry permit requests at least 14 days before their anticipated travel date. This window allows authorities to process the application and conduct necessary checks. Additionally, applicants must clearly outline their travel itineraries, specifying the islands they plan to visit and their intended stay dates. The entry permit will be confined to these specified locations, underlining the administration’s commitment to protecting the islands’ delicate coral ecosystems.

Significant details regarding transit have also been clarified. Kavaratti and Agatti are now established as the primary points for transit. A maximum transit period of 12 hours is permitted in these areas, ensuring a balance in tourist flow. To avoid any inconvenience, travelers are advised to secure their flight or ferry tickets only after receiving their entry permits, safeguarding against potential denials or processing delays.

Seamless Digital Application Process

To aid in this endeavor, the official e-permit portal has been designed for efficiency, managing personal data and travel itineraries seamlessly. Visitors must submit valid identification, such as Aadhaar cards or passports, along with recent photographs during the digital application process. While the application journey is now more streamlined, it’s important to note that a nominal fee is still required for the permit, in addition to a green tax that promotes the preservation of the islands’ unique ecological heritage.

The reforms have notably transformed the planning landscape for potential visitors. The cumbersome layers of approvals have been minimized, facilitating a more centralized approach where the administration directly manages traveler vetting without inconveniences.

Transportation to Lakshadweep

Kochi, the vibrant city in Kerala, remains the principal gateway for adventurers traveling to Lakshadweep. From here, various transportation options, including flights to Agatti Island (the only airstrip in the region capable of accommodating commercial air travel), connect travelers to their idyllic destinations. Once in Agatti, seamless transfers to other islands like Kavaratti or Kadmat are readily available via boat or helicopter, depending on the season.

For those preferring a more traditional route, passenger ferries such as the MV Kavaratti and the MV Arabian Sea regularly service the route between Kochi and the islands. These sea journeys typically take 14 to 18 hours and offer a unique experience of the majestic Arabian Sea. With the recent simplifications in entry rules, an increase in demand for both air and sea travel to Lakshadweep is anticipated.

Long-term Regional Benefits

The strategic relaxation of entry protocols is expected to drive significant growth in tourist footfall, positively impacting the local economy. This influx will likely benefit the hospitality and service sectors, fostering sustainable development that respects the islands’ natural and cultural heritage.

Furthermore, the new regulations provide a clarity that encourages travel agencies and tour operators to develop standardized travel packages with increased assurance. As the administration remains vigilant in monitoring the reforms’ impact, it is committed to ensuring that the infrastructure can support an influx of visitors while preserving the tranquility and uniqueness of the Lakshadweep islands.
