A notable year-over-year increase of 3% has been recorded, bringing the total to 1,731 active projects with 255,354 rooms in development.

This surge demonstrates the growing infrastructure dedicated to the hospitality sector across Europe. While ongoing projects are seeing steady growth, what stands out is the early planning phase, which has reached new heights with 604 projects and 86,128 rooms. This early planning indicates a significant 14% increase in hotel projects and a 16% rise in available rooms compared to the previous year, underlining the optimism prevalent within the European hospitality industry.

As of Q1 2026, the upscale chain scale is thriving, boasting 389 projects and 60,855 rooms. Meanwhile, the upper midscale chain scale features 311 projects with 44,157 rooms. The upper upscale category is experiencing remarkable growth, achieving a record high of 297 projects and 48,479 rooms. Additionally, the luxury segment is not left behind, with 179 projects and 21,729 rooms contributing to the allure of high-end accommodations.

These figures reflect an increasing demand for a wide array of hotel types, catering to diverse traveler preferences from budget to luxury. Geographical Hotspots for Hotel Development

As of Q1 2026, the countries leading the charge in hotel projects across Europe include the United Kingdom, with 268 projects providing 39,024 rooms. Turkey follows closely behind, achieving a record high of 157 projects and 21,274 rooms. Rounding out the top five are Germany, France, and Portugal, together accounting for nearly half of the region’s projects and rooms.

Highlighting urban centers, London currently leads with 72 projects and 12,813 rooms, followed by Istanbul which has 47 projects and 7,072 rooms. Notably, Lisbon is reaching new heights with a record total of 39 projects and 4,378 rooms, showcasing its growing appeal as a tourist destination. The city of Tashkent in Uzbekistan also makes an impression, with 32 projects and 5,097 rooms, indicating the burgeoning interest in hospitality development in both Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

New Hotel Openings Promise Further Growth

In 2025, the European hospitality sector welcomed 259 new hotels, adding 31,038 rooms to its offerings. As for Q1 of 2026, 38 new hotels with 4,875 rooms have already opened, and forecasts suggest an additional 281 new hotels are on the horizon for this year. Analysts anticipate that by year-end, a total of 319 new hotels with 44,156 rooms could debut, further enhancing the region’s hotel infrastructure.

This uptick in new hotel openings represents a prime opportunity for the European tourism industry, meeting both domestic needs and an influx of international visitors. It reflects confidence among developers in the ongoing tourism recovery and long-term prospects for Europe as a desirable travel destination.
