Regional Director Jovita Ganongan of DOT-CAR highlighted the importance of engaging in both local and international travel fairs, showcasing the region’s diverse attractions. These promotional events serve as platforms to introduce the unique experiences that the Cordillera offers, enticing a broader audience.
The Cordillera’s diverse tourism portfolio continues to appeal to travelers. Offering a variety of experiences such as creative tourism, wellness retreats, gastronomic adventures, cultural immersion, and exhilarating mountain activities, it has begun to set itself apart from other destinations in the Philippines. The region’s unique blend of indigenous culture, breathtaking mountain vistas, culinary delights, and outdoor adventure opportunities positions it attractively in the global tourism arena.
According to the latest records, the United States remains the leading source of international tourists to the Cordillera, with significant numbers arriving from France, South Korea, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, China, Australia, Germany, and Israel. In 2025 alone, the region saw 1,572,655 local tourists and 53,948 foreign visitors, not to mention approximately 6.7 million same-day visitors flocking to famous spots like Baguio City.
Despite economic hurdles, including rising fuel costs impacting travel costs for locals, the Cordillera’s tourism authorities have remained proactive in marketing their unique province-specific attractions to keep visitor numbers on the rise.
Recognizing that infrastructure is fundamental to tourism success, the region has prioritized modernizing transport systems to enhance visitor accessibility. Key projects are underway, such as the rehabilitation of Bagabag Airport in Nueva Vizcaya, which has received USD12.5 million for terminal upgrades and enhanced safety systems. This effort is anticipated to significantly boost tourism by improving air connectivity for both local and international tourists.
Moreover, areas like Ambaguio are being promoted for adventure tourism, with activities such as paragliding and mountain hiking expected to thrive as infrastructure continues to improve.
Furthermore, initiatives promoting community-based tourism are gaining momentum. Through the Filipino Brand of Wellness initiative, local organizations and grassroots tourism entities have undergone specialized training to enhance their tourism offerings. This effort helps local businesses, including homestays, spas, and restaurants, deliver authentic and sustainable experiences while preserving their cultural identity.
These training sessions encompass a range of topics from wellness integration to responsible tourism practices, empowering local communities to play a vital role in the tourism industry.
Destination upgrades are continually taking shape, with improvements at major attractions like Lower Magat Eco-Tourism Park, Edralin Falls, and the historic Balete Pass Shrine. These renovation efforts aim to enhance visitor experiences while ensuring that cultural and environmental integrity remains a top priority.
By promoting ecotourism and cultural preservation, the Cordillera is steadily sculpting its identity as a destination that values both its natural beauty and rich heritage through sustainable practices.
Strategically aligned with broader regional development goals, the tourism efforts in the Cordillera adhere to the Cagayan Valley Tourism Development Roadmap (RTDP 2026–2028). This comprehensive plan emphasizes product enhancement, accessibility, sustainability, and intensified marketing efforts to capture a growing share of the tourism market.
As a consequence of these initiatives, during the first quarter of 2026, a remarkable 28 percent increase in visitor numbers was reported, highlighting the resilience and appeal of the Cordillera as a tourist destination.
Through innovative marketing strategies, infrastructure modernization, and a dedicated focus on community-based tourism and wellness-related ventures, the Cordillera Administrative Region is poised to flourish as a must-visit destination in the Philippines. By delivering genuine experiences and balancing sustainability with growth, the region aims to create lasting economic opportunities for local communities while maintaining its rich cultural and natural heritage.
