This border policy took effect on May 25, initiating a welcoming phase designed to invigorate Sri Lanka’s economy. A total of 40 countries are included in this initiative, with Australians among the principal beneficiaries. Other nations included are Belgium, Canada, China, France, India, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Previously, entry into Sri Lanka required a fee of USD 50, a barrier that has now been completely waived for travelers under this new scheme. This significant reduction in costs is set to encourage family vacations and group travel, enhancing the overall tourism experience in the country.
Known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka boasts breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity. Travelers considering a visit must still adhere to specific protocols. Although there are no fees involved, obtaining an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is crucial. This application must be completed online via a dedicated platform before any transport arrangements are made.
The online application process for the ETA is straightforward and free of any hidden charges. Once travelers arrive, a physical visa-on-arrival will be stamped in their passports, allowing them legal entry for a maximum of 30 days. Should visitors wish to extend their stay, they will need to submit a formal request at local immigration offices, which will incur standard processing fees.
By eliminating upfront visa fees, Sri Lanka aims to reinvigorate various sectors of its economy. Although there will be an initial decrease in revenue from visa fees, experts believe that the increase in tourist spending will compensate for this loss through higher occupancy rates in hotels, increased dining expenses, and thriving local businesses.
