Indonesian Delegation Opts for Ho Chi Minh City for 2026 MICE Event Over Thailand

In an exciting development for MICE tourism, nearly 1,000 Indonesian tourists from Allianz Indonesia have swapped their travel destinations from Thailand to Ho Chi Minh City (HCM City) for an upcoming event in 2026. The decision, influenced by the city’s impressive MICE offerings and favorable tourism incentives, emerged after these agents discovered the city’s appealing travel promotion strategies during the International Travel Expo held in September 2025.

This choice exemplifies a growing trend, reflecting Ho Chi Minh City’s rise as a top contender for MICE tourism, which encompasses Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions. Its competitive pricing, an array of services, and commitment to quality have elevated the city’s status as a sought-after location for corporate events.

Delegation Visits Ho Chi Minh City for On-Site Evaluation

The pivotal switch from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City was confirmed following a comprehensive site inspection conducted in October 2025 by Wanderlust, an Indonesian travel agency. The inspection, facilitated by Viking Tourism, allowed representatives of Allianz Indonesia to assess potential venues and logistics for their MICE event, ultimately leading to the decision to host it in Ho Chi Minh City, projecting an attendance of approximately 1,000 guests.

The event is scheduled from May 1 to May 6, 2026, and will feature one of the largest international delegations visiting Ho Chi Minh City this year. Upon arrival, delegations were greeted at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport with flowers and souvenirs, contributing to a gratifying welcome. Many attendees expressed joy over the warm hospitality, which is often a rarity in their travels.

Travel Disruptions Managed Successfully

However, not all aspects of this exciting event proceeded flawlessly. In early May 2026, various flights from Jakarta to Ho Chi Minh City faced cancellations due to unforeseen issues, resulting in logistical hitches for some groups. The situation necessitated adjustments to travel plans, as well as additional costs stemming from fuel surcharges and rebooked flights.

Despite these challenges, the tourism sector in Ho Chi Minh City—encompassing travel agencies, hotels, restaurants, and transport businesses—demonstrated commendable cooperation in supporting the delegation. They worked diligently to maintain service pricing amidst rising operational costs, ensuring a smooth experience for the guests while solidifying the city’s reputation as a dependable MICE destination.

Engaging Experiences Await in Ho Chi Minh City

During their stay, the Indonesian delegation had the opportunity to explore iconic landmarks in Ho Chi Minh City, including the Independence Palace, Ho Chi Minh City Central Post Office, and People’s Committee headquarters. Their itinerary also included visits to Ben Thanh Market and Saigon Square, where they indulged in the local culture and cuisine.

The experiences were not limited to urban exploration; the delegation took a day trip to the Mekong Delta, particularly around My Tho in Dong Thap Province. This excursion offered a fascinating glimpse into Vietnam’s unique river culture, juxtaposing the dynamic city life with the tranquil rural scenery.

To efficiently manage the influx of visitors, the Indonesian group was divided into smaller groups for transportation, with numerous buses operating daily, allowing for seamless logistics throughout their stay. The final members of the delegation are anticipated to depart Ho Chi Minh City by May 9, filled with memories of their enriching experiences.

Ho Chi Minh City: A Rising Star in MICE Tourism

Ho Chi Minh City’s successful bid to attract such a sizable international delegation is reflective of its burgeoning appeal as a MICE tourism hub. Recent statistics indicate that the city welcomed around 3.9 million international visitors in Q1 2026 alone, a substantial number propelled by burgeoning interest from regional markets. The estimated tourism revenue during this quarter reached an impressive VND 150 trillion (about USD 5.9 billion).

Recognizing this momentum, Ho Chi Minh City has fast-tracked its MICE tourism development strategy with comprehensive plans that span up to 2030. With a focus on attracting high-value visitors and enhancing digital innovations, the city is set on the path to solidify its position as a leading MICE destination across Southeast Asia.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Ho Chi Minh City as a MICE Destination

The decision by nearly 1,000 Indonesian tourists to choose Ho Chi Minh City over Thailand underscores the city’s competitive tourism landscape. It highlights Vietnam’s escalating importance as a premier destination for those seeking both leisure and business opportunities.

Despite facing challenges such as flight disruptions and increasing travel expenses, the collaborative efforts of Ho Chi Minh City’s tourism sector ensured a successful event, showcasing resilience and adaptability. As the city gears up for continued growth within the MICE sector, it is poised to welcome even more international visitors, thereby contributing to Vietnam’s tourism expansion in the future.
