Jordanians Reassess Travel Plans as International Tourism Declines in 2026

In early 2026, travel trends among Jordanians indicated an eight percent drop in international travel for tourism, even as destinations like Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Germany continued to attract visitors. This trend reflects a broader reassessment of travel habits, influenced by economic factors, rising travel costs, and regional stability concerns. While Jordanians maintain preferences for these sought-after destinations for cultural exploration, relaxation, and religion, current economic pressures are prompting many to reevaluate their international travel considerations.

Changing Travel Patterns among Jordanians

The travel behavior of Jordanians has undergone significant transformations, with a notable increase in domestic tourism as government initiatives gain momentum. The new statistics offer a comprehensive perspective on how evolving economic conditions and travel policies are reshaping tourism practices within Jordan and beyond.

Decline in International Travel

Al-Mamlaka TV recently reported that 265,760 Jordanians traveled internationally in January and February of 2026, marking an 8% decrease from 288,834 during the same timeframe in 2025. This substantial decline points to a shift in the outbound tourism landscape, where fewer individuals are venturing abroad for leisure travel. In January alone, 161,709 Jordanians ventured out of the country, while February’s numbers fell to 104,051. Rising travel costs, economic fluctuations, and changing preferences are attributed to the decrease, underscoring the profound effect of global economic challenges and regional tensions on tourism behavior.

Preferred Destinations for Jordanians

Although the number of Jordanians traveling abroad has decreased, the allure of specific destinations remains strong. Historically, Jordanians favor regional locations along with global cities that boast cultural and historical significance. While the latest statistics do not list specific countries, it is evident that proximity plays a crucial role in shaping outbound tourism preferences, with popular choices including:

  • Egypt: Renowned for its historical depth, Egypt remains a favored spot for Jordanians seeking cultural immersion.
  • United Arab Emirates: With its modern attractions and luxury offerings, the UAE is a significant destination for leisure-seekers.
  • Saudi Arabia: As a central hub for religious travel, it attracts many Jordanians for pilgrimage, especially for Umrah.
  • Turkey: With a rich tapestry of history and natural beauty, Turkey remains a key travel destination.
  • Germany: European nations like Germany also draw interest from Jordanians for educational pursuits and leisure travel.

These countries, among others, are often sought out for cultural experiences, historical visits, and leisure getaways, illustrating the diverse needs of Jordanians. However, with the current decline in international travel, more attention is being directed toward local tourism options.

Rise in Domestic Tourism: The Urdunna Jannah Initiative

Reacting to the downturn in outbound travel, domestic tourism has surged, particularly due to the Urdunna Jannah program initiated by the Ministry of Tourism. This program has successfully attracted many Jordanians to explore their homeland, with about 51,000 participants recorded by May 2026.

The Urdunna Jannah initiative facilitated 1,422 guided trips, utilizing a fleet of buses to connect Jordanians with essential local sites, from the vibrancy of Amman to the serene shores of the Dead Sea and ancient wonders such as Petra. Collaboration with over 117 travel agencies, 81 restaurants, and 63 hotels created enriched experiences for local tourists, helping them rediscover the beauty and heritage of their country.

Decrease in Overseas Spending

Alongside the downturn in traveler numbers, there has been a notable decrease in tourism spending among Jordanians abroad. The Central Bank of Jordan reported a 6.3% drop in tourism expenditures during the first quarter of 2026, totaling $459.7 million. This decline reflects the broader trends impacting both outbound and inbound tourism, driven by local economic factors.

Net Tourism Income Insights

Consequently, Jordan’s total net tourism income suffered a 2.8% decrease totaling $1.19 billion in the first quarter of 2026, indicating ongoing challenges within the tourism sector as economic constraints shape travel behaviors.

The Road Ahead for Jordanian Tourism

As Jordanians adapt to shifting travel landscapes, there is significant potential for growth in both domestic and international tourism in 2026. The current decline in outbound travel paired with successful local tourism initiatives like Urdunna Jannah implies a burgeoning interest in exploring within Jordan. For tourism providers and hospitality sectors, this could signal new opportunities to cater to an evolving market.

While challenges such as economic uncertainty remain prevalent, there is hope that recovery in outbound tourism will come as global travel dynamics stabilize. Whether Jordanians will continue to prioritize local experiences or venture back to international destinations remains to be seen.
