To honor their achievements, each winner was presented with a uniquely designed trophy crafted by the FlipFlopi Project, an innovative initiative from East Africa dedicated to ridding the environment of single-use plastics through community-led solutions. Known for constructing the first sailing dhow entirely from recycled plastic, the FlipFlopi Project symbolizes sustainability and grassroots environmental efforts, making it the perfect collaborator for the awards.

Striving for Real-World Impact in Tourism

Each category was rigorously assessed against high standards aimed at identifying projects and initiatives that yield tangible results. The judging process focused on demonstrable impacts related to wildlife conservation, community development, sustainable tourism practices, and educational outreach. This attention to measurable outcomes positions the ATTA® for Action Awards not just as a recognition of achievement but as a framework for responsible tourism leadership.

With this competitive landscape, submissions were evaluated based on their effectiveness, potential for scalability, and their ability to foster positive change for ecosystems and communities reliant on tourism economies throughout Africa.

A Focus on Education in Conservation

The Traveller Education and Awareness Award stood out this year, with Blood Lions and Marine Dynamics sharing the accolade. The judges noted the remarkable strength and impact of both organizations, which advocate for conservation through different yet complementary strategies. One organization focuses on policy advocacy and global campaigns to reshape views around wildlife interaction, while the other excels in providing engaging experiences that lead to actionable conservation efforts.

Gamewatchers Safaris Sets a New Precedent

A significant highlight of the 2026 awards was the historical achievement of Gamewatchers Safaris and its Porini Safari Camps winning in two distinct categories—an unprecedented event in the awards’ history. The organization was honored with both the Earthkeepers Award and the Eco-Innovation Award, marking a commitment to a tourism model centered around conservation. Their innovative approach has evolved over nearly thirty years and integrates wildlife protection with sustainable tourism, ensuring minimal environmental impact while maximizing benefits for local communities.

This dual recognition emphasizes that sustainable tourism requires long-term dedication rather than short-term ticks on a checklist, providing a benchmark for responsible tourism models throughout Africa.

Consistency Among Multi-Year Winners

Some organizations have demonstrated ongoing excellence over multiple award cycles, highlighting sustained progress in Africa’s tourism sector. TAMàNA (Madagascar), recognized previously for its eco-innovation, has now achieved acknowledgment for its impactful contributions to cultural tourism, demonstrating flexibility and success across varying aspects of responsible travel.

Likewise, Marine Dynamics (South Africa), which garnered attention in earlier editions for marine conservation, continues to shine in the arena of traveler education—a testament to its expanding role in cultivating conservation awareness among visitors.

The FlipFlopi Project: A Model for Circular Economy in Tourism

The trophies awarded this year, crafted by the FlipFlopi Project, symbolize more than just success; they reflect the broader narrative of sustainability and innovation in Africa. This initiative is dedicated to combating plastic pollution through resourceful community-driven strategies, and it’s renowned for its groundbreaking work in transforming discarded plastics into practical solutions.

The handcrafted trophies serve not only as accolades but as tangible representations of Africa’s commitment to environmental recovery and sustainable tourism practices.

The 2026 ATTA® for Action Awards convey a powerful message: African tourism is increasingly characterized by measurable impacts, sustainable practices, and long-term community benefits. From marine efforts in South Africa to eco-conscious safaris in Kenya and cultural engagements in Madagascar, this year’s winners exemplify how tourism can also be a powerful force for ecological protection and social advancement.

Virginia Messina, Group CEO of ATTA®, commented: “The ATTA® for Action Awards exist to celebrate the organizations and individuals proving that tourism can be one of Africa’s most powerful forces for positive change. Across the continent, we continue to see extraordinary leadership in conservation, community empowerment, cultural preservation, and environmental innovation. As an association, we will persist in championing evidence-based responsible tourism and providing our members with the knowledge needed to thrive in an ever-evolving landscape.”

The ATTA® for Action Awards align perfectly with ATTA®’s mission to promote responsible tourism in Africa, enabling members to deliver measurable benefits to communities and the natural environment.
