Investment in Infrastructure

In March 2026, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility made headlines by announcing a staggering €1.35 billion investment earmarked for the C-5 line’s comprehensive renewal and reconstruction. Enhancing Capacity and Technology

  • Extensions of station platforms to enable the use of longer trains, measuring 200 meters, which can carry more passengers.
  • A shift to an advanced European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 2 to enhance safety and operational flexibility.
  • Strengthening infrastructure to improve accessibility, ensuring all stations offer step-free access.
  • Introducing strategic track changes and new crossovers to enhance train movement and reduce congestion.

Modern Fleet and Maintenance Infrastructure

Alongside upgrades to the rail infrastructure, Renfe will also invest heavily in a new fleet of high-capacity electric multiple units (EMUs), designed for increased reliability and comfort during peak travel times. This new fleet will allow for improved service frequency and manage larger crowds more effectively.

To maintain the modern fleet, Renfe will develop and enhance maintenance facilities at strategic locations like Móstoles and Humanes, ensuring long-term operational efficiency.

Phased Reconstruction Plan

To minimize disruption during construction, the project will unfold in phases. Some temporary service adjustments and closures will occur:

  • Segments such as Atocha to Cuatro Vientos and sections in Móstoles will experience planned partial closures during summer work in 2027 and 2028.
  • Replacement transport services will be coordinated with local transport agencies to ensure commuter mobility remains intact.

This phased approach aims to maintain a balance between the ongoing needs of commuters and the construction agenda.

Additional Investments for C-5 Corridor

The government has also approved further investments to enhance the C-5 line, allocating €32 million for modernizing railway signalling equipment between Embajadores and Móstoles-El Soto stations. This early upgrade is part of the broader modernization strategy aimed at robust operational support.
