Experience Assam's Rich Tea Culture: Heritage Tea Launches a Unique Centre in Lahowal

Nestled in the lush landscapes of Lahowal within Assam’s Dibrugarh district, the region’s storied tea culture is about to captivate visitors from across the globe. On June 21, 2026, Heritage Tea proudly launched the Northeast’s first dedicated tea experience centre, setting the stage for Assam tea to transition from a mere beverage into a deeply immersive cultural experience.

This innovative centre distinguishes itself from traditional tea facilities by embodying a living tapestry of tea knowledge, artistry, and storytelling. This bold venture reflects a broader transformation in the region’s tourism sector, where the essence of agriculture is evolving into a premium experiential attraction.

The inauguration of the centre mirrored its central philosophy. It featured a thoughtfully curated High Tea event organized by Tea Amo, a platform dedicated to celebrating and sustaining tea culture through tastings and cultural experiences. Complementing this was an exciting culinary collaboration with Muffin Top Society, led by the talented self-taught chef Hemi Sonowal. Renowned for her inventive use of local ingredients, Chef Hemi infused a modern twist into Assam’s traditional tea culture, marking the launch as a space where heritage intersects with innovation.

Rajen Baruah, the visionary Founder and CEO of Assam Heritage Tea, shared his passion at the launch, describing this centre as the result of decades dedicated to the craft of tea. He emphasized that Assam tea carries narratives beyond its flavor profiles, encapsulating the land, efforts, and legacy of generations of tea artisans. The experience centre aims to vividly present this history to visitors, ensuring the tales behind each cup are cherished and preserved.

The evening unfolded as a carefully crafted tasting journey, where attendees explored the rich sensory diversity Assam tea offers. Guests were introduced to an array of Heritage Tea’s unique blends, each selected to highlight a different facet of flavor and aroma. Featured blends included Oolong Balls, celebrated for their delicate floral notes; Smoked Green Tea, which offered subtle earthy undertones; Black Pearls, a robust full-bodied infusion; and Smoky Black Tea, characterized by its memorable warmth.

Each tea was expertly paired with culinary delights from Muffin Top Society, merging local produce with contemporary techniques. Guests savored spiced carrot cake with lemon cream cheese, avocado and tomato bruschetta made with fresh ingredients, and delicate cucumber-and-herb cream sandwiches. These pairings were designed to emphasize the interplay of texture, aroma, and flavor, transforming the tea tasting process into a multi-sensory adventure.

A highlight of the evening was an informative guided tasting session led by Assistant Blender Ishan Jyoti Baruah, who provided guests with insights into the intricate process of tea blending, from leaf selection to aroma balancing and flavor profiling. Participants learned how subtle variations in processing can lead to distinct tea characteristics, as well as how food pairings can enhance their overall experience.

Chef Hemi Sonowal later expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration, sharing that working with fine tea blends inspired her culinary creativity. Each tea told a different flavor story, allowing her to craft minimalist yet expressive food pairings. She asserted that simplicity in cuisine allowed the complexity of Assam tea to shine through, resulting in a harmonious dining experience.

Beyond the launch festivities, the Heritage Tea Experience Centre stands as a thoughtfully curated cultural hub. With over 70 specialty tea blends housed within its dedicated tasting room, visitors embark on structured tasting sessions exploring the intricacies of aroma profiles, brewing techniques, and regional variations of Assam tea.

A particularly engaging feature of the centre is its interactive blending studio. Here, guests can craft their own tea blends under the tutelage of expert tea masters, gaining insight into the science and artistry of blending while designing a personalized product that reflects their tastes. This hands-on approach adds a creative touch to the traditional tea experience, fostering a personal connection with Assam’s rich tea heritage.

The centre also houses a heritage archive and factory wing, documenting the evolution of tea production in Assam. Through carefully curated displays, insight into production processes, and narrative exhibits, visitors can trace Assam tea’s journey from the plantation to global acclaim, bridging the past with the present while honoring the cultural significance of one of India’s most treasured agricultural sectors.

Now officially open to the public, the Heritage Tea Experience Centre invites tea lovers, cultural travelers, educational groups, and corporate delegations alike. It is gaining recognition as a landmark in Northeast India’s tourism landscape. By melding experiential tourism with agricultural heritage, the centre is positioning Lahowal as a prominent destination on India’s tea tourism map.

With this groundbreaking initiative, Dibrugarh is evolving from merely a production center for tea to a vibrant cultural destination. Here, visitors can not only savor Assam tea but also immerse themselves in its rich legacy through interactive learning and experiential engagement.
